SUMMARY:World Environment Day 5 June
DESCRIPTION:Plastic production has risen exponentially in the last decades and now amounts to some 400 million tons per year– a figure set to double by 2040. \nPhoto:Parilov/Adobe Stock\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeat plastic pollution\nMore than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide\, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that\, less than 10 per cent is recycled. \nAn estimated 11 million tonnes end up in lakes\, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2\,200 Eiffel Towers all together. \nMicroplastics – tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter – find their way into food\, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50\,000 plastic particles per year –and many more if inhalation is considered. \nDiscarded or burnt single-use plastic harms human health and biodiversity and pollutes every ecosystem from mountain tops to the ocean floor. \nWith available science and solutions to tackle the problem\, governments\, companies and other stakeholders must scale up and speed actions to solve this crisis. \nWorld Environment Day joins the UNEP-led #BeatPlasticPollution this year to mobilize communities worldwide to implement and advocate for solutions. World Environment Day will spotlight the growing scientific evidence on the impacts of plastic pollution and drive momentum to refuse\, reduce\, reuse\, recycle\, and rethink plastics use to build a cleaner and more sustainable future. \n\n\n\nWhat is World Environment Day?\nLed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973\, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. In 2025\, it is hosted by the Republic of Korea. \nWhy take part?\nTime is running out\, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century\, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action\, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040. \nWe need urgent action to address these pressing issues.

SUMMARY:International Day for Biological Diversity 22 May
DESCRIPTION:The unrestricted exploitation of wildlife has led to the disappearance of many animal species at an alarming rate\, destroying Earth’s biological diversity and upsetting the ecological balance \nPhoto:Vladimir Wrangel/Adobe Stock\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHarmony with nature and sustainable development\nAs the global community is called to re-examine our relationship to the natural world\, one thing is certain: despite all our technological advances we are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our water\, food\, medicines\, clothes\, fuel\, shelter and energy\, just to name a few. \nThis involves respecting\, protecting\, and repairing our biological wealth. \nIn December 2022\, the world came together and agreed on a global plan to transform our relationship with nature. The adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework\, sets 23 targets for 2030 and 5 global goals for 2050 to stop and reverse the loss of nature in 25 years. Among its goals: restore 20% of degraded ecosystems and reduce the introduction or settlement of invasive alien species by 50%. \nThis International Day for Biological Diversity\, under the theme “Harmony with nature and sustainable development”\, highlights how this plan for nature connects with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, showing that both agendas must advance together as they support one another. \nThis campaign also aims to instill a sense of urgency. We must act now. By 2025\, only five years will remain to meet both the near-term targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the SDGs. \n\n\n\nWhat do the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals have in common?\nThe Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is responsible for the observance of the International Day and serves as the UN instrument for the protection of biodiversity. Through its website\, the CBD provides promotional tools available in multiple languages. Among them\, this interactive page that explores the connection between the GBF (Global Biodiversity Framework) and the Sustainable Development Goals. \n\n\n\nWhen biodiversity has a problem\, humanity has a problem\nBiological diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants\, animals and microorganisms\, but it also includes genetic differences within each species — for example\, between varieties of crops and breeds of livestock — and the variety of ecosystems (lakes\, forest\, deserts\, agricultural landscapes) that host multiple kind of interactions among their members (humans\, plants\, animals). \nBiological diversity resources are the pillars upon which we build civilizations. Fish provide 20 per cent of animal protein to about 3 billion people. Over 80 per cent of the human diet is provided by plants. As many as 80 per cent of people living in rural areas in developing countries rely on traditional plant‐based medicines for basic healthcare. \nBut loss of biodiversity threatens all\, including our health. It has been proven that biodiversity loss could expand zoonoses – diseases transmitted from animals to humans- while\, on the other hand\, if we keep biodiversity intact\, it offers excellent tools to fight against pandemics like those caused by coronaviruses. \nWhile there is a growing recognition that biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to future generations\, the number of species is being significantly reduced by certain human activities. Given the importance of public education and awareness about this issue\, the UN decided to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity annually.

SUMMARY:Online workshop: new report by Agora Energiewende and the University of Central Asia "Cross-Border Integration of Central Asian Energy Systems"
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to decarbonize Central Asia’s energy sector without new coal-fired power plants—and how much is the region losing by delaying integration?\nWe invite you to an online workshop where the authors will present a new report by Agora Energiewende and the University of Central Asia\, “Cross-Border Integration of Central Asian Power Systems.” The study\, based on power system modeling (PyPSA-SPICE)\, shows that eliminating new coal could reduce the region’s annual system costs by approximately $3 billion (-15%) by 2035. Expanding interconnections—primarily between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan—increases these benefits\, especially in the face of rising gas prices.\nAnisa Abibulloeva Vladimir Slivyak\n📅 May 15\n🕐 2.5 hours\n💻 Zoom\nWorking language: Russian\nRegistration

SUMMARY:International Mother Earth Day 22 April
DESCRIPTION:Picture taken by the Apollo 11 crew on their way home. \nPhoto:NASA (image restored by Toby Ord)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen Mother Earth sends us a message\nMother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat\, wildfires and floods\, have affected millions of people. \nClimate change\, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity\, such as deforestation\, land-use change\, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade\, can accelerate the speed of destruction of the planet. \nThat is why we need to recover our ecosystems. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are\, the healthier the planet – and its people. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help to end poverty\, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction. But we will only succeed if everyone plays a part. \nFor this International Mother Earth Day\, let’s remind ourselves – more than ever – that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth. Join the global movement to restore our world! \n\n\nGet involved. Invest in a better future.\nProtecting the planet is everyone’s responsibility. Join UNEP’s green revolution—get involved\, connect with nature\, and empower your community to restore our planet!

SUMMARY:World Water Day 22 March
DESCRIPTION:Photo:UNICEF/Vinay Panjwani\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere water flows\, equality grows\nThe global water crisis affects everyone – but not equally. \nWhere people lack safe drinking water and sanitation close to home\, inequalities flourish\, with women and girls bearing the brunt. \nThey collect water. \nThey manage water. \nThey care for people made sick by unsafe water. \nThey lose time\, health\, safety\, and opportunities. \nAnd too often\, the systems that govern water leave women and girls out of decision-making\, leadership\, funding and representation. \nThis makes the water crisis a women’s crisis. \nWe need a transformative\, rights-based approach to solving these challenges\, where women’s voices are heard and their agency recognized. \nAll women must be equitably represented at all levels of water leadership – helping design every pipe and policy. \nAnd women must drive change in water as engineers\, farmers\, scientists\, sanitation workers and community leaders. \nAs we face growing risks\, from a changing climate and water-related disasters to financing shortfalls\, from social norms to governance gaps\, we need everybody to play their full part: managing water as a common good and building resilience for the future. \nThis includes engaging men and boys as allies in promoting safe water\, sanitation and hygiene for all\, and in challenging the norms and behaviours that hold women and girls back. \nOnly then can safe water services meet everyone’s needs – empowering women and girls to lead healthier\, more fulfilled lives – and making water a force for sustainable development and gender equality that benefits us all. \n\n\n\n\nPlay your part!\n\nWater can be a powerful force for gender equality — but only if everyone plays their part. Individuals\, schools\, organizations\, companies and governments all have a role to play to ensure that where water flows\, equality grows. \nDownload resources. \n\n\nKey messages for World Water Day 2026\n\nThe global water crisis affects everyone – but not equally. Where people lack the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation\, inequalities flourish\, with women and girls bearing the brunt. It’s time to centre women and girls in water solutions.\nWomen must shape the future of water. Water services must withstand climate change and meet everyone’s needs. We need a transformative\, rights-based approach to solving the water crisis\, where women’s voices\, leadership and agency are fully recognized.\nWhere water flows\, equality grows. When women and girls have equal voice in water decisions\, services become more inclusive\, sustainable and effective. We must invest in women’s leadership to make water a force for a healthier\, more prosperous\, gender-equal future that will benefit us all.

SUMMARY:International Day of Forests | 21 March
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests\, countries are encouraged to undertake local\, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees\, such as tree planting campaigns. \nThe theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests. \n\n\n\nCelebrating forests and economies\n  \nForests and economies is the theme of the 2026 International Day of Forests\, celebrating the essential roles of forests in driving economic prosperity. These roles go well beyond income and jobs from forest production and the trade of renewable raw materials and foods: forests also sustain family and community agriculture\, enhance agricultural productivity\, and safeguard healthy watersheds. \nWith many countries seeking to move toward a sustainable bioeconomy\, forest products offer nature-based solutions as replacements for carbon-intensive materials while generating new economic opportunities. \nForests are indispensable for healthy economies – today and for future generations.  \n\n\n\n\nHow will you mark the day?\n\n\n\n\n\nShare the video\, forest fact animations\, logo and banners – available in multiple languages. Check out the International Day of Forest social media kit for more resources.\nEnter the 2026 International Day of Forests photo contest!\nJoin the conversation on social media using the #ForestDay hashtag. Pass on some of this year’s key messages or take a photo of your favourite forest and share online.\nOrganize or join events celebrating forests: tree plantings\, symposiums\, art exhibitions\, photo competitions or host a student debate.\nDon’t forget to tell us about it at IDF@fao.org and send us photos so we can add them to the gallery of events happening around the world.

SUMMARY:World Day for Glaciers 21 March
DESCRIPTION:Glaciers are considered as important water towers since they store approximately 70% of the global freshwater. \nPhoto:DJoseph/Adobe Stock\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGlaciers: Guardians of Earth’s Future\n  \nGlaciers are nature’s frozen sentinels\, vast rivers of ice and snow that carve the Earth\, silently bearing witness to the passage of time and the shifting rhythms of our planet. \nThey are essential to Earth’s ecosystem\, acting as critical freshwater reservoirs and indicators of the planet’s health. They provide water for millions of people\, regulate sea levels\, and support biodiversity. \nYet\, these frozen giants are under threat. Rising global temperatures are causing glaciers to retreat at an alarming rate\, leading to water scarcity\, rising sea levels\, and increasing the chances of natural disasters like floods or landslides. \nThese cascading changes jeopardize ecosystems\, human livelihoods\, and economies around the world. To address this urgent challenge\, ambitious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is essential. \nThe first World Day for Glaciers\, declared by the UN in its resolution A/RES/77/158 along with the International Year of Glaciers 2025\, encourage us all to act to preserve the vital role of glaciers in sustaining life on Earth for generations to come. \n  \n\n \nDCrane Photography/Adobe Stock\n\n\n\nJoin the movement\, save the glaciers\n\nUNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization join forces to champion the cause of glaciers. SUMMARY:World Wetlands Day 2 February
DESCRIPTION:Wetlands for our common future\nWetlands are ecosystems\, in which water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life. A broad definition of wetlands includes both freshwater and marine and coastal ecosystems\, such as all lakes and rivers\, underground aquifers\, swamps and marshes\, wet grasslands\, peatlands\, oases\, estuaries\, deltas and tidal flats\, mangroves and other coastal areas\, coral reefs\, and all human-made sites such as fishponds\, rice paddies\, reservoirs and saltpans. \nThese lands are critical to people and nature\, given the intrinsic value of these ecosystems\, and their benefits and services\, including their environmental\, climate\, ecological\, social\, economic\, scientific\, educational\, cultural\, recreational and aesthetic contributions to sustainable development and human wellbeing. \nAlhough they cover only around 6 per cent of the Earth’s land surface\, 40 per cent of all plant and animal species live or breed in wetlands. Wetland biodiversity matters for our health\, our food supply\, for tourism and for jobs. Wetlands are vital for humans\, for other ecosystems and for our climate\, providing essential ecosystem services\, such as water regulation\, including flood control and water purification. More than a billion people across the world depend on wetlands for their livelihoods – that’s about one in eight people on Earth. \n\n\n\n\nOur future depends on them\n\nThe theme for World Wetlands Day is “Protecting wetlands for our common future“. \nCheck the Ramsar’s official website\, leading entity for this international day\, and get to know the importance of these ecosystems. Make the voices of nature be heard with this material available in several languages. \n\n\n\nWhy they are in danger\nWetlands are among the ecosystems with the highest rates of decline\, loss and degradation. Indicators of current negative trends in global biodiversity and ecosystem functions are projected to continue in response to direct and indirect drivers\, such as rapid human population growth\, unsustainable production and consumption and associated technological development\, as well as the adverse impacts of climate change. \nWetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests and are Earth’s most threatened ecosystem. In just 50 years — since 1970 — 35% of the world’s wetlands have been lost. Human activities that lead to loss of wetlands include drainage and infilling for agriculture and construction\, pollution\, overfishing and overexploitation of resources\, invasive species and climate change. \nThis vicious cycle of wetland loss\, threatened livelihoods\, and deepening poverty is the result of mistakenly seeing wetlands as wastelands rather than lifegiving sources of jobs\, incomes\, and essential ecosystem services. A key challenge is to change mindsets to encourage governments and communities to value and prioritize wetlands.

SUMMARY:International Day of Clean Energy 26 January
DESCRIPTION:Clean energy: for all…\nEnergy lies at the core of a double challenge: leaving no one behind and protecting the Planet. And clean energy is crucial to its solution. \nIn a world grappling with climate change\, clean energy plays a vital role in reducing emissions\, and can also benefit communities lacking access to reliable power sources. Still today\, 685 million people live in the dark – more than 80 per cent of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. \nThe connection between clean energy\, socio-economic development\, and environmental sustainability is crucial in addressing issues faced by vulnerable communities worldwide. \nFor populations without clean energy access\, the lack of reliable power hinders education\, healthcare\, and economic opportunities\, and many of these developing regions still rely heavily on polluting fossil fuels for their daily life\, perpetuating poverty. If current trends continue\, by 2030 around 1.8 billion people will still use unsafe\, unhealthy and inefficient cooking systems\, such as burning wood or dung. \nAlthough this situation has generally been improving\, the most recent figures show that the number of people without electricity actually increased by 10 million in 2022\, as population growth outpaced progress. The world is not on track to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7)\, which aims to ensure access to affordable\, reliable\, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030. \n  \n… and for our planet\nBut adopting clean energy is integral to the fight against climate change\, as well. \nA large chunk of the greenhouse gases that blanket the Earth and trap the Sun’s heat are generated through energy production\, by burning fossil fuels (oil\, coal\, and gas) to generate electricity and heat. \nThe science is clear: to limit climate change\, we need to end our reliance on fossil fuels and invest in alternative sources of energy that are clean\, accessible\, affordable\, sustainable\, and reliable. Renewable energy sources – which are available in abundance all around us\, provided by the sun\, wind\, water\, waste\, and heat from the Earth – are replenished by nature and emit little to no greenhouse gases or pollutants into the air. \nAt the same time\, improving energy efficiency is key. Using less energy for the same output – through more efficient technologies in the transport\, building\, lighting\, and appliances sectors for instance: saves money\, cuts down on carbon pollution\, and helps ensure universal access to sustainable energy for all. \n  \n  \nBackground\nThe International Day of Clean Energy on 26 January was declared by the General Assembly (resolution A/77/327) as a call to raise awareness and mobilize action for a just and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet. \n26 January is also the founding date of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)\, a global intergovernmental agency established in 2009 to support countries in their energy transitions\, serve as a platform for international cooperation\, and provide data and analyses on clean energy technology\, innovation\, policy\, finance and investment

SUMMARY:International Mountain Day
DESCRIPTION:Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation\, adaptation and youth\nOver centuries\, mountain communities have developed solutions to adapt to their harsh environments\, deal with climate change\, reduce poverty and protect or restore biodiversity. \nThis International Mountain Day 2024 (IMD 2024) focuses precisely on the capacity and needs of its people through a triple approach: “Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation\, adaptation and youth.” \nInnovation is essential for addressing complex mountain-related issues. It encompasses technological advancements as well as creative problem-solving such as climate-smart agriculture. \nWhile dealing with climate change’s pressures on mountains\, adaptation becomes imperative for building resilience and reducing vulnerability. Adaptation strategies include solutions such as ecosystem-based approaches to disaster risk reduction and the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems. \nLastly\, the active participation of youth is essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability of mountain solutions. IMD 2024 promotes decent work and quality employment for young persons\, accessible training\, and entrepreneurship opportunities that contribute to the sustainable use of mountain resources. \nWhy we need an International Mountain Day\n  \nMountains are natural jewels we should treasure. They are home to 15% of the world´s population and host about half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. They provide freshwater for everyday life to half of humanity\, helping to sustain argiculture and supply clean energy and medicines. \nUnfortunately\, mountains are under threat from climate change \,overexploitation and contamination\, increasing the risk s for the people and the planet. \nAs the global climate continues to warm\, mountain glaciers melt affecting freshwater supplies downstream\, and mountain people — some of the world’s poorest — face even greater struggles to survive. \nSteep slopes mean the clearing of forest for farming\, settlements or infrastructure can cause soil erosion as well as the loss of habitat. Erosion and pollution harm the quality of water flowing downstream and the productivity of soil. In fact\, over 311 million rural mountain people in developing countries live in areas exposed to progressive land degradation\, 178 million of whom are considered vulnerable to food insecurity. \nThis problem affects us all. We must reduce our carbon footprint and take care of these natural treasures. \nInternational Mountain Day\, celebrated since 2003 through FAO\, creates awareness about the importance of mountains to life\, highlights the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and builds alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world. \nhttps://www.un.org/en/observances/mountain-day
