SUMMARY:International Day Against Pesticides
DESCRIPTION:                                  \n\n\nOn December 3\, the world celebrates International Pesticide Free Day . Tragic events preceded the choice of this date. On December 3\, 1984\, an environmental disaster occurred at a pesticide plant in Bhopal\, India\, which led to the establishment of this day.\nThe goal of International Pesticide Free Day is to draw global attention to the problems caused by the production and use of these hazardous chemicals. Pesticides are synthetic chemicals that many countries widely used in the second half of the 20th century to increase agricultural yields.\n      However\, as it later became clear\, the industrial production of these chemicals caused more harm than good for the world’s population. Pesticides not only achieved their intended purpose\, allowing for high yields in rural fields (which\, however\, was later questioned)\, but also damaged water\, soil\, plants\, animals\, and people\, causing irreparable harm. \n      In the final decades of the 20th century\, pesticides became a major risk factor for human life and health\, as well as for all living things\, in a number of countries. While the annual per capita pesticide use in the USSR in the 1960s was less than one kilogram\, by the end of Perestroika\, this figure had tripled. According to UN experts\, pesticides are the main cause of the “silent catastrophe”—as the current state of soils in Europe is known. Furthermore\, it has been discovered that pesticides are so persistent and so widespread that they have even been detected in Antarctic penguins\, where they were carried by air and ocean currents. \n      The consequences of chemical exposure on the Earth’s biosphere are dire. They lead to various mutations and diseases in humans and animals\, disruption of the reproductive and hormonal systems\, immune status\, cancer\, and birth defects. \n      Today\, as a counterpoint to “pesticide-based” agriculture\, scientists are promoting the concept of “organic farming\,” based on combining different plant species\, natural pest control\, and replacing chemical fertilizers with organic ones. However\, the question of when this concept will find widespread practical application remains open.\n

SUMMARY:World Soil Day 5 December
DESCRIPTION:Photo:M/Adobe Stock (AI generated)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHealthy Soils for Healthy Cities\nOur planet’s survival depends on the precious link with soil. Over 95 percent of our food comes from soils. Besides\, they supply 15 of the 18 naturally occurring chemical elements essential to plants. \nHowever\, in the face of climate change and human activity\, our soils are being degraded. Erosion disrupts the natural balance\, reducing water infiltration and availability for all forms of life\, and decreasing the level of vitamins and nutrients in food. \nSustainable soil management practices\, reduce erosion and pollution\, and enhance water infiltration and storage. They also preserve soil biodiversity\, improve fertility\, and contribute to carbon sequestration\, playing a crucial role in the fight against climate change. \nBut when we think about soil\, we almost always associate it with the countryside and nature. We rarely stop to consider that urban soil is also fundamental. \nThis World Soil Day 2025 focuses on urban landscapes with the theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities.” Beneath asphalt\, buildings\, and streets lies soil that\, if permeable and vegetated\, helps absorb rainwater\, regulate temperature\, store carbon\, and improve air quality. But when it’s sealed with cement\, it loses these functions\, making cities more vulnerable to flooding\, overheating\, and pollution. \nTherefore\, this day invites everyone—from policymakers to citizens—to rethink urban spaces from the ground up\, to build greener\, more resilient\, and healthier cities. \n\n\n\n\nGet the message across!\nFAO’s website is full of initiatives and materials to raise awareness and spread the message of this observance on different platforms. Find out about a multitude of worldwide events related to the importance of healthy soils. \n\n\n\n\nBackground of a decade celebrating soils\nWorld Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. \nAn international day to celebrate soil was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002. Under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership\, FAO has supported the formal establishment of WSD as a global awareness raising platform. The FAO Conference unanimously endorsed World Soil Day in June 2013 and requested its official adoption at the 68th UN General Assembly. In December 2013\, the UN General Assembly responded by designating 5 December 2014 as the first official World Soil Day.

SUMMARY:World Climate Day
DESCRIPTION:December 8th marks World Climate Day\, an initiative of several environmental associations in France and Belgium. These December events\, held during the first ten days of the month\, are a traditional annual event.\n\nWorld Environment Day has its own anthem. The first World Environment Day was celebrated on June 5\, 1973. The UN General Assembly established World Environment Day in 1972.\n“We must make 2020 to 2030 a critical decade of real decisions and real action… The urgency of what we need to do cannot be overstated\,” said US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Action John Kerry on Earth Day.\nThere are no more seasons\, my lady… at the initiative of several environmental associations in France and Belgium\, we celebrate World Climate Day (or World Climate Action Day) on December 8th.\nNot a week goes by without us hearing about global warming and its consequences for the future of the planet. It’s true that the situation we currently face is serious\, and the few steps being taken here and there are unable to stop this phenomenon.\nHowever\, in climatology\, as elsewhere\, oversimplification does not really contribute to thinking\, and studying the planet over a very long period reveals alternating hot and cold periods\, each of which had very important consequences for the survival of many animal species.\nWhat’s changed today is that human agency has increased significantly over the past century\, if only due to population growth (we’ve gone from 1 billion people on Earth in 1900 to over 7 billion today). At the rate at which we’re exploiting the earth’s resources\, we’ll need at least 3 billion of them to hope to survive for the long term…\nWe urgently need to realize that the earth does not belong to us and that we have a responsibility to the generations that come after us!

SUMMARY:The United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:     The Universal Declaration of Human Rights  proclaims individual rights\, civil and political rights\, and freedoms (equality before the law\, the right of everyone to liberty and security of person\, freedom of conscience\, and others). It was adopted on December 10\, 1948\, by the UN General Assembly. Two years later\, this day was proclaimed Human Rights Day. \n     The Declaration became the first universal human rights document. Many countries have incorporated its key provisions into their basic legislation and constitutions. Its principles form the foundation of many human rights covenants\, conventions\, and treaties concluded since 1948. \n     The Declaration has only the status of a recommendation\, but two binding treaties were adopted on its basis: the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights . Many of the Declaration’s provisions have acquired the status of customary law over the course of many years of practice; in some countries\, the Declaration is partially recognized. This document has been translated into many languages (more than 350 as of 2009). Eleanor Roosevelt called the Declaration the “Magna Carta” for all humanity (hence the Declaration is sometimes called the Charter of Human Rights). \n     The most comprehensive binding human rights treaties concluded under the auspices of the UN are the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic\, Social and Cultural Rights\, signed on 16 December 1966. \n     The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights monitors compliance with adopted covenants\, conventions\, and treaties. The High Commissioner sends inspectors to various countries around the world\, who compile reports on human rights compliance on the ground. If rights are not respected\, tribunals intervene. \n     There are about 40 officially registered human rights organizations in Russia.

SUMMARY:Power Engineer's Day
DESCRIPTION:Power Engineer’s Day  is a professional holiday for all workers in the industry that covers the production\, transmission\, and distribution of electrical and thermal energy to consumers\, which they celebrate on one of the shortest daylight hours of the year. \n     The history of this holiday begins on May 23\, 1966\, when a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR established  Power Engineer’s Day in commemoration of the adoption of the State Plan for the Electrification of Russia (GOELRO) \, which was adopted on December 22\, 1920\, at the VIII All-Russian Congress of Soviets. For most of our fellow citizens\, the GOELRO plan is associated\, first and foremost\, with the famous “Ilyich light bulb.” In December 1920\, the All-Russian Congress of Soviets adopted this 650-page document\, which became the starting point for the creation of the domestic electric power system\, as well as the first scientifically based\, long-term economic development program in the country. \n     Power Engineer’s Day is a holiday for all those who have ever been involved in the creation and maintenance of energy systems. It is also a holiday for those who continue to hold responsible positions in the energy industry. The power engineering profession encompasses a wide range of specialties. The title of power engineer refers to specialists who develop\, manufacture\, and operate equipment for the thermal and power-electric sectors. This is far from all that a power engineer does. Engineering personnel design power supply systems\, test\, and commission new electrical equipment. A distinctive feature of the profession is the wide variety of specialties that can be classified as power engineering. Power engineers carry the risk of electric shock\, making it one of the most dangerous professions.  \n     In recent years\, interest in clean energy sources has grown exponentially. In addition to traditional methods\, electricity is generated using wind and solar power. Electricity is also generated by recycling household waste. Tidal power plants harness the energy of seawater during high and low tides. Recently\, the use of biogas in electric generators on large farms has become especially popular. Compact waste recycling systems have emerged that can provide heat and electricity for a small cottage. Systems that utilize the differences in acidity and alkalinity in different soil layers to generate electricity have been developed and are being implemented. \n     This event is not limited to Russia. Energy workers are also celebrated on this date in other countries\, including Armenia\, Ukraine\, Belarus\, and Kyrgyzstan. Some other countries have maintained the tradition of celebrating the energy industry on a variable date.
