DESCRIPTION:World Sustainable Transport Day\, celebrated on 26 November\, is a special occasion to reflect and make transport safer\, more efficient\, more sustainable and greener. \nSustainable transport connects people\, communities and economies in harmony with the environment\, improving social equity and development while reinforcing safety and resilience. \nThe United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution to designate a UN World Sustainable Transport Day at its 77th session in May 2023. DESCRIPTION:From November 24 to December 5\, 2025\, the 20th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP20) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) will be held in Samarkand \nUzbekistan has become the first country in Central Asia to host a meeting of 184 parties (183 countries + the European Union) to CITES and a wide range of stakeholders in the field of conservation and trade in wild animals\, the Ministry of Ecology noted. \nThe global event\, which will be held during the Year of Environment and Green Economy\, is expected to attract more than 4\,000 participants and delegates. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor reference: The CITES Convention\, signed on March 3\, 1973\, and entering into force on July 1\, 1975\, regulates international trade in over 40\,900 species of wild animals and plants. Uzbekistan joined the Convention in 1997 and has been actively involved in its activities. \nOnline registration for all participants is now open. Representatives of member countries\, observers\, the media\, and other interested parties can register on the official CITES website: https://cites.org/eng/cop20#registration until September 25\, 2025. SUMMARY:World Science Day for Peace and Development
DESCRIPTION:International Week of Science and Peace\nThe International Week of Science and Peace was first observed during 1986 as part of the observance of the International Year of Peace. The organization of events and activities for the week was undertaken as a non-governmental initiative; the secretariat for the International Year of Peace was informed of the preparatory activities and the final summary of events that occurred during the week. The organizers sought to encourage the broadest possible international participation in the observance. \nBased on the success of the 1986 observance\, the organizers continued their efforts in successive years. In recognition of the value of the annual observance\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61 in December 1988\, which proclaims the “International Week of Science and Peace”\, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls. The General Assembly urged Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to encourage relevant institutions\, associations and individuals to sponsor events and activities related to the study and dissemination of information on the links between progress in science and technology and maintenance of peace and security; urged Member States to promote international co-operation among scientists and required the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly as its forty-fifth session on the activities and initiatives of Member States and interested organizations in connection with the week. \nThe annual observance of the International Week of Science and Peace is making an important contribution to the promotion of peace. The Week encourages greater academic exchanges on a subject of universal importance while also generating greater awareness of the relationship of science and peace among the general public. SUMMARY:International day against climate change
DESCRIPTION:Every October 24\, the International Day Against Climate Change is commemorated around the world\, a celebration established by the United Nations to raise awareness about its devastating consequences\, some of which are already clearly perceptible throughout the planet. \nWhat is climate change? \nThe answer is very simple. It consists of a change in the pattern of the Earth’s climate due to a gradual\, generalized and persistent rise in the temperature of the layer of the atmosphere that is in direct contact with the Earth’s crust and that generates melting of the ice and rising sea levels\, between other phenomena. \nWhat causes climate change? \nThere are lots of things that affect climate change. \nThe climate on Earth has been changing since it formed 4.5 billion years ago. Until recently\, natural factors have been the cause of these changes. Natural influences on the climate include volcanic eruptions\, changes in the orbit of the Earth and shifts in the Earth’s crust (known as plate tectonics). \nHowever\, the changes that we are currently seeing are happening at a scale and speed that natural cycles cannot explain. Human activity\, such as burning fossil fuels\, is currently the main driver of climate change. \nAre humans responsible for climate change? \nWhen looking at all the evidence\, there is a large scientific consensus that humans are the leading cause of climate change. In their latest report\, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) stated with over 95% certainty that human activity is the main cause of climate change. \nWhat are greenhouse gases? \nGreenhouse gases are gases that trap heat in the atmosphere\, acting as a blanket around the Earth which stops the heat escaping into space. \nSome greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide\, methane and nitrous oxide come from both human and natural sources. Others\, such as fluorinated gases\, are only produced by human activity. \nWhich human activities release greenhouse gases? \nThe following greenhouse gases are emitted during common human activities: \n\nCarbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels (coal\, natural gas and oil)\, solid waste\, trees and other biological materials. Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere when it is absorbed by plants.\nMethane (CH4). Methane is emitted during the production and transport of fossil fuels. Methane emissions also result from livestock and other agricultural practices.\nNitrous oxide (N2O). Nitrous oxide is emitted during agricultural and industrial activities\, combustion of fossil fuels and solid waste\, as well as during treatment of wastewater.\nFluorinated gases. Fluorinated gases are emitted from a variety of industrial processes\, including the production of primary aluminium.\n\nWhat is the greenhouse effect? \nThe greenhouse effect is the process by which the greenhouse gases present in the Earth’s atmosphere trap the Sun’s heat. This process makes the Earth much warmer than it would be without the greenhouse effect. \nThe greenhouse effect is critical to our survival. In fact\, without greenhouse gases and the correspondent greenhouse effect\, the Earth would be about 30 degrees colder than it is today. Without greenhouse gases and their warming effect\, we wouldn’t be able to survive. \nHowever\, since the Industrial Revolution and the massive burning of fossil fuels\, we’ve been adding more and more greenhouse gases into the air\, trapping even more heat. Instead of keeping the Earth at a warm\, stable temperature\, the greenhouse effect is heating the planet at a much faster rate. This is the main cause of climate change. \nHow much has the Earth’s temperature increased? \nIf the global average temperature of the times before large-scale industrial development is compared with the current one\, it is found that\, after just over 250 years\, it has increased by more than 1ºC\, a figure that might seem ridiculous\, but the fact is that\, without anthropogenic action\, this degree would take millennia to increase naturally. \nHow much can the temperature rise before it is too late? \nThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommended that the global temperature should not rise more than 1.5ºC. In the Paris Agreement it was agreed to keep the increase of temperature below 2ºC. \nWhat is the future of our planet? \nThe sum of the various zonal climate changes\, which have become extreme and forceful\, have already made up a great comprehensive climate change that affects the entire planet and its impact is known as the “climate crisis”. This not only harms humans\, but also wreaks havoc on plants and animals\, causing irreversible damage to biodiversity and local and global ecosystems. \nWhat worries most is the future of our planet and that of the generations to come. If the thresholds set in the Paris Agreement are exceeded\, scientists warn that there could be a disproportionate increase in extreme weather events. This limit is known as the “tipping point” and once it is reached\, the natural terrestrial feedback systems would increase the intra-atmospheric heat more rapidly\, turning the planet into the “Greenhouse Earth”. \nThe year 2020 is a landmark for climate change and its mitigation\, especially with the unexpected impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns and economic downturn across the world. This is happening when the world is witnessing some of its worst storms\, heat waves\, ice melting and wildfires\, making the twin challenges of climate change and COVID-19 one of the worst periods in human history of the last hundred years. \nEven so\, many countries are stepping up their commitments to minimise their greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the Paris Agreement and some are even going beyond to achieve the goal of limiting global warming to well under 1.5 degree Celsius by 2050 through green new deals. \nMany countries are also trying to integrate climate change mitigation into their post-pandemic economic recovery strategies. \nhttps://www.linkedin.com/pulse/24-october-international-day-against-climate-change-felipe/

SUMMARY:International Day of the Snow Leopard
DESCRIPTION:Snow leopards are often called the “ghosts of the mountains” due to their elusive nature and their ability to blend seamlessly into their high-altitude\, snowy habitat. \nPhoto:Adobe Stock/kwadrat70\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ghost of the mountains\nBig cats are elusive\, but the snow leopard\, especially so. Locals living alongside the leopards often refer to them as the ‘ghosts of the mountains’ as they are hardly ever seen. \nThe snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is found in the high mountain regions of Asia. It is an iconic and ecologically significant species found across the mountainous areas\, including in Afghanistan\, Bhutan\, China\, India\, Kazakhstan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Mongolia\, Nepal\, Pakistan\, the Russian Federation\, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. \nThe snow leopard has been listed in appendix I to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1975\, and in appendix I to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals since 1986. Also\, the snow leopard’s population was classified as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species in 2017 and is facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium-term future. \nThe greatest threats to the survival of the snow leopard are habitat loss and fragmentation\, prey depletion and illicit trafficking\, illegal hunting\, including poaching\, and climate change. \nInternational Day of the Snow Leopard\nIn 2024\, the General Assembly proclaimed 23 October as International Day of the Snow Leopard in order to enhance international and regional cooperation in support of efforts to conserve the snow leopard\, given its role in the overall ecosystem. \nThe General Assembly stressed the urgent need to address the unprecedented global decline in biodiversity\, including by preventing the extinction of threatened species\, improving and sustaining their conservation status and restoring and safeguarding ecosystems that provide essential functions and services\, including services related to water\, health\, livelihoods and well-being. \nSafeguarding and conservation\nMountain ecosystems play a crucial role in providing water and other essential resources and services to a large portion of the world’s population. Sustaining and protecting mountain flagship species is key to the functioning of these ecosystems. \nSafeguarding and conservation of the snow leopard contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, including SDG 6 (Water and Sanitation)\, SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Biodiversity). \nRegional initiatives\nGovernments of the snow leopard range countries take measures towards safeguarding the species\, including the establishment of breeding programmes and the development of a regional strategy and national action plans for the conservation of the snow leopard. \nThere are several regional initiatives for range State cooperation\, transboundary approaches and outcomes of multi-partner initiatives\, conventions and mechanisms at the regional level\, including: \n\nSaudi Arabia and Panthera’s Arabian Leopard Initiative\,\nGlobal Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme\,\nStrategy for Snow Leopard Conservation in the Russian Federation\,\nSnow Leopard Conservation Action Plan 2024–2030 and Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Management Plan 2017–2026 of Nepal\,\nSnow Leopard Conservation Action Plan 2024–2034 of Bhutan\, a climate-integrated landscape approach to snow leopard conservation\,\nSnow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme of Pakistan\,\nBishkek Declaration of 2017 entitled “Caring for snow leopards and mountains: our ecological future”\, signed by 12 snow leopard range countries\, including all five Central Asian countries\,\nSamarkand Resolution of 2024 for snow leopard conservation and climate adaptation\, adopted at the eighth Steering Committee Meeting of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme\,\nMemorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of the Snow Leopard and its Ecosystems in the Western Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai\, signed by Kazakhstan\, Kyrgyzstan\, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan\,\nInitiative of India to create the International Big Cat Alliance\,\nJaguar 2030 road map\,\nNorth-East Asian Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation Nature Conservation Strategy on conservation of flagship species that include the amur tiger\, the amur leopard and the snow leopard\, and\nInternational Tiger Forum.\n\nhttps://www.un.org/en/observances/snow-leopard-day

DESCRIPTION:The project “Researching the Adaptive Resilience of Rural Communities in Central Asia” (CARe)\, led by the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO\, Germany) in collaboration with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC)\, aims to address this challenge. The project applies an evolutionary approach to resilience to examine how communities cope with climate change and transformation. By combining available quantitative data at the micro-level (household)\, long-term climate and environmental observations\, and participatory research\, the project will develop an operational multidimensional resilience index and create an interactive atlas. The initiative also emphasizes stakeholder dialogue to ensure the relevance of research findings to local realities and their applicability.

It is also a source of jobs\, opportunity\, and hope for millions of people.” \n– UN Secretary-General António Guterres \n\n\n\n\n2025 Theme — Our Ocean\, Our Obligation\, Our Opportunity\n \nThis year’s World Maritime Day theme — “Our Ocean\, Our Obligation\, Our Opportunity” — shines a spotlight on the essential role the ocean plays in sustaining life\, livelihoods\, and the global economy. It provides half of the oxygen we breathe\, feeds billions of people\, regulates the climate\, and enables more than 80% of global trade through maritime transport. The ocean is also home to countless marine species and a vital source of jobs\, food\, and economic opportunity for millions. \nBut the ocean faces mounting pressure—from pollution and overuse to the accelerating effects of climate change. Protecting it is not just about saving nature—it is a global responsibility that touches every aspect of human life. \nAs the largest sector operating in ocean space\, the shipping industry plays a crucial role in both facilitating global commerce and advancing ocean protection. It works hand in hand with sectors like tourism\, fisheries\, and marine research to manage the ocean sustainably. The International Maritime Organization (IMO)\, through its robust global regulatory framework and wide-ranging technical assistance programmes for its 176 Member States\, continues to lead efforts for cleaner\, safer seas. \n\nThis theme also highlights the deep interconnection between shipping and broader global initiatives\, especially the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is closely tied to SDG 14: Life Below Water\, which focuses on conserving and sustainably using marine resources. Since the SDGs were adopted in 2015\, Member States have taken concrete action to improve ocean governance. The theme also connects to SDG 13: Climate Action\, SDG 9: Industry\, Innovation and Infrastructure\, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. For example\, the adoption of the 2023 IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy marked a milestone in charting a course toward net-zero emissions from shipping by around 2050. \nThis year’s theme underscores key international milestones\, including the UN Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement)\, ongoing negotiations for a global instrument to tackle plastic pollution\, and the third UN Ocean Conference (9-13 June 2025). \nIt also invites governments\, organizations\, and individuals alike to recognize that safeguarding the ocean is a shared duty—and an opportunity to build a more sustainable\, resilient\, and inclusive future. \nWorld Maritime Day 2025 is celebrated this year on 25 September\, with a parallel event expected to take place in the United Arab Emirates. DESCRIPTION:The 15TH CALP will be mainly focused on developing professional skills in public speaking\, strategic communication\, and countering misinformation. Special attention will be given to training participants in audience engagement techniques and effective media interaction. Participants will gain hands-on experience in conducting interviews\, participating in press conferences\, and preparing meaningful and persuasive statements that resonate with their target audience. \nIn addition\, the 15th CAPL will aim to strengthen youth connectivity across Central Asia by providing a neutral regional dialogue platform for young people. This platform will facilitate discussions on water cooperation\, water diplomacy\, gender equality\, climate change\, energy efficiency\, the NEXUS approach\, and other development issues among representatives of governments\, academia\, and civil society. The program will also work to amplify and highlight the role and voice of youth in regional cooperation. \nThe overarching goal of the 15th CALP is to empower\, develop effective communication and public speaking skills\, and inspire young professionals from Central Asia to become influential leaders in the field of environmental change.  By providing them with the necessary knowledge\, skills and networks\, CALP aims to cultivate a new generation of leaders capable of addressing climate change and promoting regional co-operation to create a sustainable and environmentally conscious future in Central Asia. \nParticipation in  15th CALP is fully funded by CAREC and donors. From each Central Asian country will be selected 5 participants  between the ages of 20 to 35. Selection is based on open competition\, and for civil servants’ – via official nominations.    \nThematic areas: \n\nDeveloping public speaking skills.\nEffective communication with the media and development of media literacy.\nManagement of water resources\, water governance and sustainable path.\nWater diplomacy and Transboundary cooperation.\nGender Mainstreaming in Water Governance in Central Asia.\nRole and capabilities of youth in strengthening regional cooperation in Central Asia.\n\nPrinciples: \n\n“Think globally\, act locally\, cooperate regionally!”\nTransparency – an online system for registration\, all countries are represented in the selection committee; the list of selected candidates is published publicly.\nEnvironmentally friendly – a web application instead of printing the agenda\, all souvenirs are made from environmentally friendly materials.\nOpenness – partners from international organizations and programs\, financial institutions\, civil society organizations and private sector will be given the opportunity to moderate CALP thematic sessions.

They serve as a crucial source of fresh water\, supporting drinking water supplies\, agriculture\, and industry. \nLakes also play a key role in maintaining biodiversity\, offering a habitat for countless species of fish\, plants\, and wildlife. \nBeyond their ecological significance\, lakes contribute to climate regulation by keeping the planet cool\, absorbing the floodwater and storing carbon. \nAdditionally\, they provide recreational and economic opportunities\, attracting tourism\, fishing\, and other activities that support local communities. \nBut lakes are affected by a combination of overuse\, pollution and climate change. Lake pollution is frequently caused by inflows from fertilizers\, contaminants and solid waste being dumped directly\, or flushed into lakes via rivers\, and this is worsened by global warming – leading\, for instance\, to more frequent and intense floods. \nThe water levels of lakes are also changing dramatically. Rising temperatures and changes to cloud cover\, which are leading to decreasing ice cover\, are increasing the rate of water evaporation. \nWe need to act now. \nThis first World Lake Day\, let’s be aware of the problem lakes are facing. \nLet’s protect them today for a sustaining life tomorrow.
