SUMMARY:Online workshop: new report by Agora Energiewende and the University of Central Asia "Cross-Border Integration of Central Asian Energy Systems"
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to decarbonize Central Asia’s energy sector without new coal-fired power plants—and how much is the region losing by delaying integration?\nWe invite you to an online workshop where the authors will present a new report by Agora Energiewende and the University of Central Asia\, “Cross-Border Integration of Central Asian Power Systems.” The study\, based on power system modeling (PyPSA-SPICE)\, shows that eliminating new coal could reduce the region’s annual system costs by approximately $3 billion (-15%) by 2035. Expanding interconnections—primarily between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan—increases these benefits\, especially in the face of rising gas prices.\nAnisa Abibulloeva Vladimir Slivyak\n📅 May 15\n🕐 2.5 hours\n💻 Zoom\nWorking language: Russian\nRegistration

SUMMARY:International Day for Biological Diversity 22 May
DESCRIPTION:The unrestricted exploitation of wildlife has led to the disappearance of many animal species at an alarming rate\, destroying Earth’s biological diversity and upsetting the ecological balance \nPhoto:Vladimir Wrangel/Adobe Stock\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHarmony with nature and sustainable development\nAs the global community is called to re-examine our relationship to the natural world\, one thing is certain: despite all our technological advances we are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our water\, food\, medicines\, clothes\, fuel\, shelter and energy\, just to name a few. \nThis involves respecting\, protecting\, and repairing our biological wealth. \nIn December 2022\, the world came together and agreed on a global plan to transform our relationship with nature. The adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework\, sets 23 targets for 2030 and 5 global goals for 2050 to stop and reverse the loss of nature in 25 years. Among its goals: restore 20% of degraded ecosystems and reduce the introduction or settlement of invasive alien species by 50%. \nThis International Day for Biological Diversity\, under the theme “Harmony with nature and sustainable development”\, highlights how this plan for nature connects with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)\, showing that both agendas must advance together as they support one another. \nThis campaign also aims to instill a sense of urgency. We must act now. By 2025\, only five years will remain to meet both the near-term targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the SDGs. \n\n\n\nWhat do the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals have in common?\nThe Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is responsible for the observance of the International Day and serves as the UN instrument for the protection of biodiversity. Through its website\, the CBD provides promotional tools available in multiple languages. Among them\, this interactive page that explores the connection between the GBF (Global Biodiversity Framework) and the Sustainable Development Goals. \n\n\n\nWhen biodiversity has a problem\, humanity has a problem\nBiological diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants\, animals and microorganisms\, but it also includes genetic differences within each species — for example\, between varieties of crops and breeds of livestock — and the variety of ecosystems (lakes\, forest\, deserts\, agricultural landscapes) that host multiple kind of interactions among their members (humans\, plants\, animals). \nBiological diversity resources are the pillars upon which we build civilizations. Fish provide 20 per cent of animal protein to about 3 billion people. Over 80 per cent of the human diet is provided by plants. As many as 80 per cent of people living in rural areas in developing countries rely on traditional plant‐based medicines for basic healthcare. \nBut loss of biodiversity threatens all\, including our health. It has been proven that biodiversity loss could expand zoonoses – diseases transmitted from animals to humans- while\, on the other hand\, if we keep biodiversity intact\, it offers excellent tools to fight against pandemics like those caused by coronaviruses. \nWhile there is a growing recognition that biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to future generations\, the number of species is being significantly reduced by certain human activities. Given the importance of public education and awareness about this issue\, the UN decided to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity annually.

SUMMARY:The Fourth High-Level Conference on Water Resources Tajikistan\, Dushanbe\, 25 to 28 May 2026
DESCRIPTION:As the initiator of the International Decade for Action and co-chair of the 2023 UN Water Conference\, Tajikistan continues to make every effort to advance the water agenda internationally. Building on the achievements of previous Dushanbe Water Process conferences (2018\, 2022\, 2024)\, the 2026 Conference will be a key preparatory stage leading up to the 2026 UN Water Conference\, accelerating progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 6 and other internationally agreed water-related goals. \nThe Fourth International High-Level Conference on the International Decade for Action in Dushanbe will bring together heads of state and government\, ministers\, UN entities\, international and regional organizations\, financial institutions\, academic institutions\, civil society representatives\, youth\, indigenous peoples\, and the private sector to advance commitments and showcase transformative solutions. Discussions will focus on maintaining and further building on the momentum created by the 2023 UN Water Conference\, advancing the implementation of the Water Action Agenda\, and initiating discussions ahead of the 2028 UN Water Conference\, which will be held in Tajikistan. \nParticipants will take part in high-level plenary sessions\, nine thematic sessions aligned with the themes of the Interactive Dialogues of the 2026 UN Water Conference\, pre-conference forums\, side events\, and an international exhibition. \nThe programme will also include a regional preparatory meeting organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)\, providing an important opportunity for Asia-Pacific countries to coordinate regional positions and strengthen their collective contribution to the 2026 UN Water Conference. \nThe Dushanbe Conference will also provide a unique opportunity to participate in special excursions that will allow participants to explore Tajikistan’s rich cultural and historical heritage\, reflecting ancient civilizations and the Silk Road legacy\, as well as gain first-hand insight into Tajik experience in water resources management\, including sustainable water infrastructure and hydropower. \nThe main results will be reflected in the Final Declaration\, the Co-Chairs’ Summary and the official Contribution to the 2026 UN Water Conference. \nThe Fourth Conference of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development\, 2018-2028” will provide a key global platform for strengthening partnerships\, fostering innovation\, mobilizing finance and accelerating concrete action to ensure sustainable\, inclusive and climate-resilient water development worldwide.
