ADB to support Tajikistan in preserving glaciers and combating climate change

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will launch four new projects in Tajikistan in 2025 aimed at preserving glaciers, improving water security, financing the Rogun hydroelectric power station, developing transport, and digitalizing agriculture, the bank’s representative office reported.

The programmes will be implemented in light of the growing threat of climate change and the need to protect natural resources, especially glaciers, which play a key role in the region’s water supply and hydropower.

2025 has been declared the International Year of Glacier Conservation and will mark the beginning of the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025–2034). According to ADB Resident Representative in Tajikistan Ko Sakamoto, the problem of melting glaciers is particularly relevant for the Asia-Pacific region.

“More than two billion people depend on stable river flows, which are changing due to accelerated glacier melting. This affects drinking water supply, hydropower, irrigation, livestock farming and fisheries. Preserving glaciers is one of the most important challenges of our time,” Ko Sakamoto emphasized.

As part of the initiative, Tajikistan will host the International Conference on Glacier Conservation in 2025, which will unite the global community in finding solutions to climate problems. This topic will later be discussed at the UN Climate Change Conference in Brazil.

The Asian Development Bank is a key partner of the Government of Tajikistan in organizing the conference. “ADB is proud to be Tajikistan’s leading partner on climate change issues. As the climate bank for Asia and the Pacific, we will actively support the country and other developing countries in their efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change,” Sakamoto said.

ADB has previously implemented a number of large projects in Tajikistan in the areas of water resources, hydropower, and agriculture. The new initiatives are expected to help the country better adapt to the challenges of climate change and preserve its natural resources for future generations.Источник: https://avesta.tj/2025/02/27/aziatskij-bank-razvitiya-podderzhit-tadzhikistan-v-sohranenii-lednikov-i-borbe-s-izmeneniem-klimata/ Avesta.tj – Все права защищены.
