Dushanbe, Tajikistan – January 23, 2025 – The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) continues to expand its partnerships with leading universities in the Central Asian region. As part of this effort, Zamira Zholdaskyzy, CAREC’s Coordinator for the Community of Practice and Academic Network Development, held a meeting with Rauf Jurakhonzoda, Vice-Rector for International Relations at the Tajik Technical University (TTU) named after Academician M. Osimi.
A key outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which lays the foundation for further integration within the Network of Academic Society (NAS) and strengthens the partnership between TTU and CAREC. As part of the MoU, CAREC provided TTU with a set of Nexus games in the Tajik language – a unique tool that enables students to better understand the interconnections between water, energy, and food resources.
TTU named after Academician M. Osimi is an active member of the NAS, promoted by CAREC since 2012.
In 2021, CAREC conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) for faculty members of Tajik universities, during which participants mastered the methodology of conducting the Nexus game. Since then, they have actively promoted it among students, helping them delve deeper into the principles of sustainable resource management.
In addition to the signing of the MoU, the meeting also discussed the upcoming NAS meeting, which is scheduled to take place at TTU named after Academician M. Osimi.
CAREC continues to support the academic community in the region, contributing to the preparation of a new generation of specialists in sustainable natural resource management.
Brief reference
The Nexus game was developed by the Centre for Systems Solutions in collaboration with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and the “Sustainable Energy for All” Initiative. The history of its implementation in the Central Asian region began in 2018 within the framework of the European Union project “Nexus Dialogue in Central Asia” implemented by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC). The game represents a facilitated process of playing five different scenarios for developing the territories upstream and downstream while addressing water needs of population, industry and agriculture and taking into account climate change challenges. Currently, the Nexus game is actively promoted by CAREC in universities, academies, basin organizations, and media in Central Asia.
The Central Asian Network of Academic Society (NAS) promotes interaction and knowledge exchange between representatives of educational institutions involved in the management of environment, water, land and energy resources in the context of climate change. NAS has been operating since 2013 with the support of development partners such as the Swiss Agency for Development (SDC), the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the European Union (EU), the World Bank (WB), etc. on the platform of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia.
