The Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programme team of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia participated in a webinar held on January 23, 2024, as part of the SWITCH-Asia programme.

Representatives from government agencies, businesses, and international organizations gathered to explore the key changes in waste management regulations. The event focused on the discussion of the latest provisions of the European Union’s Waste Shipment Regulation (WSR), which came into force in May 2024.

The webinar highlighted new requirements for hazardous and non-hazardous waste shipments, the ban on plastic waste exports to non-OECD countries, and measures to prevent illegal waste trafficking. Discussions also addressed the adoption of electronic reporting systems and efforts to improve transparency in waste management practices.

Participants had the opportunity to examine the practical implications of the new rules, their impact on the Asia-Pacific region, and the global recycling market. Real-world examples and recommendations for transitioning to environmentally sound waste management practices were shared.

The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where participants discussed challenges and opportunities directly with experts.
