Exploring Environmental Protection: Tajik Delegation Visit to Spain

In a significant step towards strengthening international cooperation on environmental conservation, a delegation from the Committee for Environmental Protection of the Government of Tajikistan is set to visit Aragon, Spain, from March 3 to March 7, 2025. This visit, organized by the University of Zaragoza and the Administration of Aragon, aims to foster knowledge exchange in biodiversity conservation, protected area management, and sustainable forest governance.

A Week of Learning and Exploration

Day 1: Exploring the Pyrenees’ Protected Areas

The visit commenced with an in-depth exploration of the Pyrenees’ renowned protected areas. Delegates traveled to Aínsa, receiving insights into the Sobrarbe Geopark’s unique geological and ecological significance. Following this, experts discussed the environmental monitoring of Ordesa National Park and the role of biosphere reserves in conservation. The day also visited the Ecomuseum of the Bearded Vulture Foundation, highlighting raptor conservation efforts. An afternoon excursion into Ordesa National Park with park rangers provided a firsthand look at conservation strategies in action.

Day 2: Governmental Approaches to Environmental Protection

The second day was dedicated to understanding the environmental policies of the Government of Aragon. Discussions revolved around biodiversity management, protected areas, forest conservation, and sustainable hunting and angling practices. This provided the Tajik delegation with a comprehensive overview of how regional governance supports environmental sustainability. The day concluded with an exploration of Saragossa’s diverse landscapes.

Day 3: Insights into Guara Nature Park

Guara Nature Park, known for its dramatic cliffs and rich biodiversity, was in focus of the third day. Delegates visited the park’s interpretation center to gain insights into its conservation initiatives. A guided trek through the park’s scenic trails offered a deeper appreciation of its ecological significance and the role of rangers in maintaining its biodiversity.

Day 4: Academic Exchange at the University of Zaragoza

A key aspect of the visit is academic collaboration. Experts from the University of Zaragoza delivered lectures on conservation strategies, environmental research, and sustainable management practices. The delegation also participated in laboratory sessions, allowing hands-on experience with scientific methodologies. The day culminated in a special lecture on nature conservation in Tajikistan by Sino Tohirzoda, followed by an open debate, fostering a two-way exchange of ideas and experiences.

Day 5: Exploring Sotos and Galachos Nature Reserve

The final day featured a visit to the Sotos and Galachos Nature Reserve, where delegates learned about habitat restoration and species recovery initiatives. A tour of the Recovery Centre for the endangered Margaritifera auricularia mussel and the Wildlife Recovery Centre showcased rehabilitation efforts for vulnerable species. The day concluded with a visit to the Aquarium, providing an overview of aquatic biodiversity conservation.

Strengthening International Collaboration

This visit marks a crucial step in strengthening Tajikistan’s environmental protection initiatives through international collaboration. By exchanging knowledge and best practices with experts in Spain, the delegation aims to enhance conservation policies, improve protected area management, and integrate innovative environmental solutions in Tajikistan.

As global environmental challenges grow, such initiatives underscore the importance of cross-border cooperation in preserving natural heritage for future generations. This visit will undoubtedly contribute to sustainable development efforts and reinforce the commitment of both nations to environmental stewardship.

The visit was organized within the framework of the regional component, “Consulting Services for Strengthening Regional Collaboration,” implemented by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) under the Tajikistan Resilient Landscape Restoration Project, funded by the World Bank’s Resilient Landscape Restoration Program (RESILAND CA+).
