The Prime Minister has ordered the opening of so-called carbon polygons across the country
At a government meeting on January 21, Industry and Construction Minister Kanat Sharlapayev spoke about measures to reduce the negative impact on the environment from industrial enterprises. He reported that, in accordance with the Environmental Code, 17 enterprises in the industries supervised by the department must implement the best available technologies, which will reduce the impact on the environment and improve working conditions for employees of the enterprises.
“As of today, five of them have been approved and have begun the phased implementation of the programs. Also, the adoption of three more programs by enterprises in the metallurgical industry is planned for the current year,” said Kanat Sharlapaev.
Kazakhstan must also reduce emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere as a participant in the Paris Agreement on achieving carbon neutrality. In this regard, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov instructed the Ministry of Ecology, together with the akimats, to promptly complete the implementation of automated systems for monitoring emissions into the environment.
The head of government also emphasized the importance of creating carbon landfills aimed at absorbing carbon and reducing the impact on nature. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources was instructed to develop legislative amendments for the implementation of such projects.
“We need to transform unproductive farmland and degraded pastures into a living ecosystem, plant forests. This is a mechanism accepted in the world that allows us to create new green zones – so-called carbon polygons that absorb carbon and reduce the impact on the environment, especially around enterprises,” the Prime Minister explained.
Olzhas Bektenov also emphasized the importance of developing environmentally responsible behavior among citizens within the framework of the republican campaign “Taza Kazakhstan”. “Environmental culture should become an integral part of our lives. All government agencies, businesses and the public should actively engage in this work,” Bektenov recommended.
A carbon polygon is a specialized site where emissions and accumulation of carbon dioxide are monitored under different types of terrain and soil cover. The first carbon polygon appeared in Kazakhstan at the biological station of the village of Zholtaptyk in the Pavlodar region in November 2022.
