Baku will host UN Climate Change Conference on 11-22 November 2024.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate as a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Alexey Kokorin prepared the overview on COP29 key priorities and expectations in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) and Ecomed PU.

The document is a comprehensive overview of the most important agenda items, challenges and expectations for the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference – UNFCCC COP29.

This year’s conference is expected to focus on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, which aims to mobilize funds in the form of annual support for developing countries.

The review also highlights important topics such as international cooperation under the Paris Agreement’s Articles 6.2 and 6.4 on emission reductions, gender dimensions in climate action, and the urgent need to prepare for COP30 with initiatives on nature-based solutions and non-market approaches.

Key Themes of COP29:

Financial Commitments for Climate Action: Negotiations will center around the NCQG, addressing the urgent need to fund mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage initiatives at an unprecedented scale.

International Cooperation on Emissions Reduction: Finalizing operational guidelines for Articles 6.2 and 6.4 could pave the way for international markets supporting carbon reduction projects in 2025.

Gender and Social Equity in Climate Policy: The review stresses the importance of addressing gender disparities in climate impacts and incorporating equity into the global climate response.

In addition to these main topics, COP29 will host informal events on climate finance, energy, health, and nature-based solutions to foster a dialogue that emphasizes transparency, collaboration, and innovative financing strategies.
