On December 11 of this year, the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sheralizoda Bahodur Ahmadjon, on the sidelines of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), took part and spoke at a high-level round table dedicated to the problems and obligations of the countries of the world on the topic “Protecting and restoration of freshwater ecosystems”, which is critical for mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
During his speech, the Chairman of the Committee noted that the global initiatives of the Leader of the Nation, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Honorable Emomali Rahmon, to solve water and climate problems are timely measures.
In particular, the participants of this event were invited to take an active part in the high-level international conference on glacier conservation, which will be held in Dushanbe in 2025 following the resolution of the UN General Assembly.
It was also noted that the clean water issue, which was held at the UN Water Conference in March 2023, co-chaired by the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is considered a significant initiative and guides member countries to maintain and restore clean water ecosystems.
Clean water is one way to promote the inclusion of water-related goals in multilateral environmental agreements and development goals such as the 2030 Agenda and the Sendai Framework.
This event was held with the support of the host state of COP-28 – the UAE, as well as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
