Rubio Announces Closure of 83% of USAID Programs

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported  on the X network that following a review of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), it was decided to close 83% of its programs. The rest will be transferred to the State Department.

Rubio said the government had decided to cancel 5,200 of the agency’s 6,200 contracts. “The 5,200 contracts that are now being canceled represent tens of billions of dollars spent that were not in the national interest of the United States (and in some cases, even contrary to it),” he wrote on X.

According to Rubio, the remaining USAID programs will be managed  by the State Department . “We are working with Congress to ensure that the remaining 18% (Rubio probably meant 17% –  Ed. ) of programs (about 1,000) that we are retaining are now more effectively managed by the State Department,” the US Secretary of State added, calling the reform of US foreign aid “historic” and  thanking the US Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), unofficially headed by billionaire Elon Musk , for  its  participation .

USAID is responsible for managing civilian overseas assistance and development cooperation. The independent agency previously had an annual budget of $42.8 billion (€41.5 billion).
