Tashkent took first place in the world ranking of cities with the most polluted air, according to IQAir data as of the evening of January 27.

On the morning of this day, as reported by colleagues from the Uzbek editorial office, Tashkent was in seventh place in this rating , when the concentration of PM2.5 was 22.6 times higher than the WHO recommended average annual value of PM2.5

By the evening, the PM2.5 concentration (at the time of publication) exceeded 34 times the WHO recommendation, which is rated as “very harmful” on the IQAir scale.

These values mean an increased likelihood of worsening heart and lung diseases, as well as impacts on public health, especially in sensitive groups. Everyone should avoid and wear masks against pollution in the open air. Ventilation is not recommended. Air purifiers should be turned on.

PM2.5 are hazardous microparticles containing dust, asphalt and heavy metal compounds.

After Tashkent, the leaders of the anti-rating included: Dhaka, Delhi, Lahore, Kathmandu and Cairo. At the same time, the cleanest air was recorded in the cities of Minneapolis and Los Angeles (both in the USA), as well as in Kuching (in Malaysia) and Sydney (Australia).

Tashkent already ranked first in the IQAir ranking of the most polluted capitals in January of this year. The city was in the top 20 and even top 15 in the last month of 2024.

According to a World Bank report, an average of 3,042 people die prematurely in Tashkent each year due to exposure to PM2.5 fine dust.

Earlier it was reported that in Tashkent region and the city of Tashkent, the activities of 46 greenhouses polluting the atmosphere were temporarily suspended.

In the new IQAir rating, Bishkek is listed in 12th place among the most polluted cities in the world, and Almaty is listed in 32nd place.
