There are 285 snow leopards living in Kyrgyzstan. This was announced at an event dedicated to the International Snow Leopard Day.

Let us recall that in 2024, the UN General Assembly proclaimed October 23 as International Snow Leopard Day with the aim of strengthening international and regional cooperation in support of snow leopard conservation efforts, taking into account its role in the overall ecosystem.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Asein Isaev, coordinators of the global program for the protection of snow leopard ecosystems, international donors and representatives of diplomatic missions.

As part of this global program, experts presented the results of a comprehensive assessment of the number of snow leopards in the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic and measures to preserve this species and its ecosystems.

Kostubh Sharma, the international coordinator of the global program, said that the most modern methods were used during the research in 2020-2024. In particular, camera traps helped to collect more information about the number of snow leopards and their habitat.

“Scientists have studied more than 125 thousand square meters. More than 875 camera traps have been installed. According to the research results, it became known that from 234 to 349 snow leopards live in Kyrgyzstan. On average, we have concluded that 285 individuals live in the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic,” he said.

Kostub Sharma noted that these data show the importance of protecting and preserving ecosystems, and that comprehensive measures will help increase their numbers.
