A meeting of the heads of water and energy departments of the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan took place in Tashkent on January 27. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The meeting discussed water and energy cooperation to ensure electricity supplies to Kyrgyzstan in 2025, and held negotiations on water volumes, rational use of water and energy resources, and mutual support in the energy sector between the countries.

The issues of uninterrupted and timely import of electricity to the Kyrgyz Republic for the successful passage of the autumn-winter period of 2024-2025 were also considered.

“The supply of electricity to Kyrgyzstan is carried out in accordance with the approved schedules. Mutual obligations on water resources and electricity supplies are resolved in a friendly format,” said Energy Minister T. Ibraev.

The meeting reviewed the draft Roadmap for stages of attracting funding and the mechanism for implementing the project “Construction of Kambaratinskaya HPP-1”.

As noted by the Vice Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Sungat Yesimkhanov, the project of a hydroelectric power station on the Naryn River with a capacity of 1860 MW will become one of the largest in Central Asia and will contribute to the further development of good-neighborly relations between the countries of the Central Asian region.

Currently, as part of the World Bank’s technical assistance, activities are being carried out to prepare a feasibility study. This includes an assessment of the technical, economic, financial, environmental and social components of the Kambarata HPP-1 project, as well as the implementation of other key activities and studies necessary for its further implementation.

In his speech, the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan noted the development of relations between the countries and emphasized:  In the context of global climate change and growing energy needs, cooperation in this area is becoming particularly relevant and provides a unique opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss joint projects and develop strategies aimed at sustainable water management and efficient use of energy resources.”
