Local youth conferences on climate change (LCOY) have started in Turkmenistan. The events are being held ahead of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-29), which will be held in Baku in November.

A few days before COP-29, the Youth Conference on Climate Change (CОY19) will traditionally be held, in which young representatives of Turkmenistan will take part.

As reported by Turkmenistan: Golden Age, for two years in a row, the Central Asian region presented a common statement at the annual climate summits based on the principle of “Five countries – one vote”, and in 2021, the first statement was prepared from the youth of Turkmenistan due to the country’s desire to participate in the conferences in the format of young environmentalists.

Now Turkmenistan is the only country in the region that prepares and holds LCOY conferences in anticipation of the youth forum.

Thus, on September 3, the velayat tour of youth discussions started, which is being held under the coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the participation of the ministries of education, environmental protection, energy, the State Concern Turkmengaz, as well as with the participation of international UN agencies.

The velayat tour will cover all regions. Youth conferences are held at universities. Each velayat has its own climate specifics and regional themes, which, in accordance with the profile of each higher education institution, will be developed at the forums by young SDG ambassadors. For example, in the Dashoguz velayat, issues of agriculture and the Aral crisis will be considered, in the Lebap velayat – issues of environmental education and rational use of water resources, in the Mary velayat – issues of promoting renewable energy, etc.

Having started in Dashoguz at the TSHI, the event will move on September 6 to Balkanabat (Branch of the International University of Oil and Gas named after Ya. Kakayev), on September 9 to the city of Mary (State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan), on September 11 to Turkmenabat (Turkmen State Pedagogical Institute named after Seyitnazar Seidi), on the 13th to Buzmeyin (Institute of Engineering and Transport Communications of Turkmenistan).

During these meetings, the content of the statement to be delivered at CОY-19, as well as the Roadmap of events planned for implementation in 2025, will be discussed.

The final of the tour will take place on September 16 in  Ashgabat on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer and will bring together over 300 participants and guests.
