Ecology AKIpress – Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev met with UNDP Administrator Akim Steiner on September 25.
The meeting was held as part of participation in the events of the High-Level Week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, taking place in New York.
As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes, the parties discussed issues of bilateral cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and UNDP, including those related to support for reforms in the country and the practical implementation of international initiatives.
Kulubayev spoke about the need to increase the project activities of the UN Development Program in the socio-economic sphere. He called on UNDP to launch new projects in the country in the fight against poverty, strengthening women’s and children’s health care, working with migrants, education in villages, developing infrastructure in remote mountainous areas, providing access to water and energy for the population, and developing the Batken region.
Steiner noted UNDP’s readiness to continue work on current projects implemented in the Kyrgyz Republic to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and also assured of its readiness to begin work on the designated priority areas of cooperation.
The parties also exchanged views on cooperation in the field of the environment and the development of mountain regions. Thus, Kulubayev drew Steiner’s attention to the situation related to global climate change, which has led to the intensive melting of mountain glaciers. The problems and challenges of mountain countries should not be a problem only for mountain countries; common efforts to solve mountain problems should be focused on the world community, the minister said.
According to him, the Kyrgyz side relies on the support of the UN Development Program in implementing environmental and “green” projects, as well as on support to achieve goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, the parties agreed to soon launch the UN Climate Trust Fund in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The UNDP Administrator said that it was an honour for the organisation to name one of the peaks in Kyrgyzstan after the UN.
Minister Kulubaev confirmed the interest of the Kyrgyz side in further developing cooperation with UNDP.
