On October 3, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change between Minister of Ecology Aziz Abdukhakimov and Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Rebecca Grynspan.

For information, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development is an intergovernmental organization within the UN Secretariat and represents the interests of developing countries in world trade. The main task of the organization is to formulate policies on all aspects of development, such as trade, aid, transport, finance and technology.

At the beginning of the meeting, Aziz Abdukhakimov congratulated the Secretary-General on the successful holding of the World Conference on Creative Economy and wished success in further activities in the field of creative economy to strengthen cooperation. The Minister also noted that the Ministry is actively working on desertification, increasing forests, restoring natural resources, recycling waste, and combating climate change.

It was also emphasized that Uzbekistan is actively preparing to participate in the COP29 conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Baku.

“This commitment reflects the country’s commitment to addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development,” the minister said.

R. Greenspan noted that there are many common aspects of environmental protection between Uzbekistan and the UN structure, and stressed the importance of cooperation in this area.

In September 2021, Rebeca Grynspan became Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. From 1994 to 1998, she was Vice President of Costa Rica.

The foreign side reported on the completion of the current Framework Program for Cooperation in 2025 and the development of a new Framework Program by the UN Country Team in Uzbekistan. The Ministry was invited to take an active part in the formation of a new framework for cooperation to ensure the integration of important environmental priorities.

The parties discussed issues of expanding cooperation with UNCTAD, paying particular attention to promoting investment policy, foreign trade, development of a green economy and other important aspects in the field of environmental protection and ecotourism.

Following the meeting, an agreement was reached on further strengthening cooperation in the field of environmental protection.
