On October 9, in honor of the Year of Glacier Conservation, an international scientific conference entitled “Conservation of Glaciers and Sustainable Use of Water Resources in Central Asia” was held at the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, in which scientists from China took part, NIAT Khovar reports with reference to the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan. President of the National Academy of Sciences Kobiljon Khushvakhtzoda stated that Tajikistan’s glaciers make up more than 6 percent of the country’s total area and are not only an invaluable source of fresh water, but also a regulator of water resources and climate in Central Asia.

Over the past decade, the rapid melting of glaciers under the influence of climate change has become a global threat to the planet. According to experts, a third of the world’s glaciers will disappear by the end of the 21st century under changing climate conditions. Melting glaciers disrupt the ecological balance, creating a serious threat to the water cycle on our planet. In mountainous areas, this process leads to natural disasters – floods, avalanches and mudflows. Disasters cause great economic damage and also lead to loss of life. It was emphasized that the global proposals of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to the United Nations and its support by the world community encourage us to make efforts to implement these pressing issues in practice. Scientists and experts in the field of ecology, geography and glaciology from the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and the Chinese Academy of Sciences presented reports on specific topics. Also at the conference, an opinion was expressed on the development and expansion of bilateral scientific cooperation between research institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
