On November 12, in Baku, Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon participated in a high-level roundtable on climate finance and the opening ceremony of the Water for Climate Pavilion, which took place within the framework of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference. During the meetings, he emphasized the need for active actions to combat climate change, especially through financing climate projects and protecting water resources.

Emomali Rahmon expressed gratitude to the Government of Pakistan for organizing the events and emphasized that climate change today poses serious challenges to all regions, especially developing countries. In his speech, he noted that natural disasters cause significant losses to the economy and human life, and stressed the need for coordinated action by the global community to overcome climate threats. Special attention was paid to Tajikistan’s vulnerability to climate change. According to Emomali Rahmon, Tajikistan, as a developing country, is actively promoting the water and climate agenda on the world stage. He noted that Tajikistan’s initiatives were supported by the international community, which was confirmed by the adoption of 14 UN General Assembly resolutions on these issues. These initiatives, according to him, created a solid foundation for achieving global sustainable development goals in the field of water resources. The event emphasized that in order to effectively respond to climate challenges, it is necessary to attract more funds to projects related to water resources, glaciers and climate.

The President of Tajikistan called for the creation of a broad coalition of developing countries to implement reforms in the climate finance system. Emomali Rahmon also stressed the importance of protecting glaciers and recalled that the UN General Assembly declared 2025 the International Year of Glacier Conservation at the initiative of Tajikistan. He noted that Tajikistan, despite its limited resources, has already made a financial contribution to the International Trust Fund created for these purposes and plans to hold the first International Conference on Glacier Protection in Dushanbe in May 2025.

In conclusion, Emomali Rahmon expressed confidence that the current summit would be an important step to intensify the efforts of the global community in the fight against climate change and the protection of water resources, including glaciers. The President also proposed creating a regional coordination center for glaciology in Dushanbe with the support of the World Meteorological Organization to study the impact of climate change on the glaciers of Central Asia.
