BAKU /Trend/ – As part of COP29 in Baku, Trend News Agency presents a special project COP for Hope. This project provides a unique opportunity to hear the voices of world leaders, heads of state and pioneers in various fields – politics, economics, science and ecology, united by a common goal: confronting the climate challenges of our time.

Our interlocutor today is the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, Asel Raimkulova.

In an exclusive interview with Trend, A. Raimkulova emphasized that COP29 is an important event for drawing attention to the sustainable development of the mountain regions of Kyrgyzstan.

“Kyrgyzstan actively supports COP29. We have our own agenda for the development of mountain regions. The Kyrgyz pavilion at the summit is dedicated to the sustainable development of mountain areas,” she said.

According to her, Kyrgyzstan is a country with high vulnerability to the effects of climate change, which are particularly acute in mountainous areas. Raimkulova expressed hope that following the results of COP29, more attention will be paid to the problems of mountainous countries, such as preserving biodiversity and expanding specially protected natural areas.

“Climate change has a serious impact on the ecosystems of mountainous countries, increasing the risk of emergency situations. Therefore, preserving the environment is one of our most important tasks,” Raimkulova noted.

Let us recall that on November 11, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) is the highest legislative body that oversees the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

There are 198 countries that are Parties to the Convention. Unless the Parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
