Climate-friendly tourism has become a UN goal for the first time. Hotel industry representatives will record data on emissions and water and energy consumption.

More than 50 countries participating in the UN Climate Change Conference in the Azerbaijani capital Baku have committed to promoting climate-friendly tourism. UN World Tourism Organization Executive Director Zorica Urosevich, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, November 20, called the decision a “historic milestone.”

She stressed that climate-friendly tourism had become one of the UN climate protection goals for the first time . According to Usorevich, the tourism business accounts for 3% of global GDP, while at the same time, this sector produces 9% of the world’s greenhouse gases.

It is indicated that the countries that signed the relevant agreement in Baku want to make climate protection a more important factor in the field of tourism. At the same time, it is planned to achieve specific goals.

The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance has announced that it will record and report on data such as greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy consumption in its areas of operation. According to Glenn Madziuk, head of the association, this data will help representatives of the tourism industry and travelers understand the impact of their actions. “We are an industry that is fundamentally interested in protecting every tourist destination,” he said on the sidelines of a forum in Baku.

The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance represents the interests of 55,000 hotels with a total of 7 million rooms. Among others, the organization’s members include hotel chains such as Accor, Hilton, and Marriott.
