EBRD to allocate €17.6 million to modernize water supply in Khatlon region
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has signed €8 million in grant agreements to modernise water supply systems in the towns of Bokhtar and Dangara in Tajikistan’s Khatlon region. The funds complement an €8 million loan package signed in October 2024, the EBRD press service reported .
The signing ceremony was attended by Holger Wiefel, Head of the EBRD Resident Office in Tajikistan, and Faiziddin Kahhorzoda, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Tajikistan. The agreements will cover projects to restore and build main water pipelines and water intake facilities, as well as to introduce an automatic water metering system.
In addition, EUR 1.6 million will be allocated to support the implementation of priority investments in water supply and to improve the financial and operational performance of utilities. The total investment in the project will amount to EUR 17.6 million.
The project is part of the EBRD’s long-standing partnership with Tajikistan. Since 2004, the bank has invested more than €122 million in 14 projects to improve water supply and sanitation in 23 cities across the country. These efforts help ensure sustainable access to clean water, which is key to improving local people’s livelihoods and maintaining sanitation standards.
