The World Bank Group Board approved a $350 million grant to finance the first phase of construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power plant. The decision was made at a meeting on December 17.

The World Bank representatives noted that the project brings together the efforts of ten international partners under the leadership of the bank, which is a significant achievement. The Rogun hydroelectric power station is considered an example of successful cooperation for similar initiatives in the region and the world.

Tajikistan’s Permanent Representative to the World Bank and IMF Payrav Amirzoda emphasized that the country has significant hydropower potential, producing about 527 billion kWh per year, of which only 5% has been used. Amirzoda noted that Tajikistan ranks sixth in the world in terms of green energy production.

The Rogun hydroelectric power plant will not only solve the problem of electricity shortages in Tajikistan, but will also contribute to the region’s energy security by reducing carbon emissions. Once completed, the hydroelectric power plant will be a key element in achieving energy independence for the country and will open up new opportunities for economic development. The total cost of the project is 650 million US dollars.

The second round of financing in the amount of 300 million US dollars is planned for the next stage of implementation.
