On February 2, 2025, the world celebrates World Wetlands Day, highlighting the crucial role of these ecosystems in preserving biodiversity, maintaining water balance, and mitigating climate change.
The theme for 2025 – “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future” – emphasizes the need for protecting and restoring these vulnerable natural areas.
Wetlands play a key role in ensuring water security, reducing flood risks, and providing habitats for diverse flora and fauna. However, more than 35% of wetlands have disappeared in the last 50 years, making their restoration a priority for sustainable development.
World Wetlands Day serves as an annual reminder of the need for joint action by governments, scientists, and citizens to protect these vital ecosystems.
