At a meeting with the akim, a city resident inquired about the akimat’s plans to improve the environment in Almaty and asked whether the akim could promise that by the fall of this year, city residents would feel an improvement in air quality.

– Unfortunately, I will not give the floor. I will work as expected. The problems that exist in Almaty have accumulated not over several years, but over many years. Incorrect development, excessive construction, excessive amount of personal transport, underdeveloped transport infrastructure. All these problems exist, we have described all of this in the city development program. In 2025, our main task is to complete the first stage of the modernization of TPP-2 together with Samruk Energy and finally complete it next year. In this case, we will significantly reduce emissions. The transition to gas will reduce 90% of emissions, or 34 thousand tons, – the akim noted.

He added that the second task is the development of transport infrastructure and public transport.

– I think that by the end of the year we will complete BRT along Raimbek, along Zheltoksan, we are purchasing electric buses in bulk, we are purchasing the first 200, another 200 will be purchased by private carriers, and we assume that by the end of 2026 all our public transport will be environmentally friendly. In addition, in 2026-2027, the completion of the paving of radial roads to the BAKAD is expected to relieve the load on the northern districts of our city. These are the tasks we face. In this case, I will talk about how much we can reduce emissions and improve air quality, – said the mayor.

E. Dosayev noted that he and his children, like everyone else, breathe the same air, and improving the environmental situation is a priority.

– We want to get a green Almaty and we will move forward according to the program. In addition, green spaces are important; last year we provided our districts with automatic irrigation and new seedlings. These are not low-growing trees, but full-fledged trees that can survive – not conifers, but deciduous trees. I think that at the end of the year we will be able to discuss what has changed in the city. I am no less worried, and perhaps even more worried than anyone else as the mayor of the city. When the health department tells me how the incidence of allergies has increased due to air quality, it worries me greatly, – he noted.

Let us recall that in the fourth quarter of 2024, the level of air pollution in Almaty was assessed as very high.

Experts explained what comprehensive measures are needed to really improve air quality in Almaty. They also explained why approaches such as air ionization or inversion layer penetration are ineffective in a large city.
