As reported by AZERTAC with reference to the Ministry of Justice of Uzbekistan, the corresponding decree was signed by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Thus, the council will perform the functions of the highest advisory body to the president, dealing with issues of mitigating the effects of climate change and adapting to them. Its main tasks will be monitoring the fulfillment by Uzbekistan of obligations arising from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change of 1992 and the Paris Agreement of 2015, aimed at activating the implementation of the convention.
According to the decree, the National Center for Green Transformation and Adaptation to Climate Change will be renamed the National Center for Climate Change (Climate Center). To increase scientific and academic potential and develop fundamental research in the country, a Climate Science Forum will be created at the Central Asian University for Environment and Climate Change (Green University).
These steps by Uzbekistan to strengthen its climate policy and scientific potential are especially relevant in the run-up to the COP29 conference, which will be held in Baku.
The establishment of the Climate Council and the renaming of the National Climate Change Centre demonstrate Uzbekistan’s commitment to fulfilling international climate obligations and preparing for participation in COP29 in Baku, which will draw the attention of the world community to issues of climate change and environmental sustainability in the region.
