Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan – On November 5, 2024, a training session was held in Tashkent for specialists from basin organizations in Central Asia. The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) conducted this training as part of the project “Climate-responsive and gender-sensitive basin management” (hereinafter referred to as the Project). The Project is part of the Regional Program “Climate Sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia,” implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
Representatives from the Aral-Syr Darya Basin Inspection (ASBI) in Kazakhstan and the Naryn-Karadarya, Naryn-Syr Darya, Syr Darya-Sokh, and Chirchik-Ahangaran Basin Irrigation System Authorities in Uzbekistan participated in the training. Special attention was given to the inclusion of women specialists from these organizations. The event was held in a hybrid format, with online participants joining via the Zoom platform. This training is part of a series of cross-border capacity-building events for basin organizations that the Project plans to conduct through the end of 2025.
The main goal of the event was to improve the qualifications of water management sector specialists, enabling them to apply the knowledge gained in climate-resilient Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in practice. Participants had the opportunity to explore various aspects of IWRM, including international water law and its application in the region, inclusive approaches to basin planning, the use of climate-focused web GIS services, and automated water accounting systems.
The training concluded with a lecture on efficient water use in agriculture, a general discussion, and the awarding of certificates to the participants.
Training materials developed by regional trainers were provided to participants and will also be subsequently posted on the Eurasian River Basin Management Portal (www.riverbp.net). CAREC invites all interested representatives of the water management sector to actively participate in such events and contribute to the sustainable development of the region’s water resources.
