The Great Solar Wall in the Kubuki Desert will include 3.46 million solar panels and will have a capacity of 100 gigawatts.
China is undertaking an ambitious project to build a “Great Solar Wall” consisting of 3.46 million solar panels along the northern edge of the Kubuqi Desert in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China Daily reports .
As noted in the publication, the Kubuki Desert is ideal for solar power plants. The area has huge solar resources with approximately 3,100 hours of sunshine per year.
Liu Tianyun, deputy director of the Ordos City Forestry and Grassland Bureau, said the project would not rival the real Great Wall in length, but would still stretch for about 400 kilometers with an average width of 5 kilometers.
The Great Solar Wall will eventually set a new record for solar farm area in China, with a capacity of 100 gigawatts when completed, the official said.
In turn, NASA published a new photograph of part of the “Great Solar Wall”, noting that the panels are being installed in a long narrow strip of dunes south of the Yellow River between the cities of Baotou and Bayannur.
NASA stressed that the Great Solar Wall project is designed to generate enough energy to fully supply Beijing with a population of about 22 million people.
