On September 4, 2024, with the support of the UNECE and UNEP, a working meeting was held at the national level on the preparation of the National Report on the State of the Environment in Turkmenistan for the period 2017-2022 in the building of the Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat.
The review of the National State of the Environment Report (NSoER) is a detailed assessment of the progress made by the country in the area of harmonization of environmental and economic goals and objectives and compliance with international environmental obligations. The NSoER evaluates the work of countries to reduce total pollution, manage natural resources, integrate the environmental component into socio-economic policies, implement environmental policies and strategies, and strengthen international cooperation.
The meeting was attended by specialists from ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, national experts, as well as representatives of the public. Mergen Kepbanov, Director of the Project Office, was present from the project office of the Regional Environmental Center of Central Asia (CAREC) in Turkmenistan.
Presentations were made by representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, as well as national experts involved in the preparation of this review, who were officially appointed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. The Chief Lawyer of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan briefly presented the structure of this report, the number of chapters of the future document, the timing of writing, as well as the expected scope of this review.
Mergen Kepbanov, Director of the CAREC Project Office in Turkmenistan, noted that this meeting was very fruitful, and that the upcoming review of the periods from 2017 to 2022 was an important point of discussion. The latest environmental Performance Review of Turkmenistan was prepared by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in 2012. This review addressed important issues for the country related to the development, implementation and financing of environmental policies, climate change, water management, air quality, waste, energy, forestry, land management and cooperation with other countries in the field of the environment.
