The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia Country Office for Kyrgyzstan participated in a meeting of donor organizations.

The meeting took place with the assistance of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic on March 19. It discussed projects of international development partners covering the areas of environment, climate change and disaster risk management.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide members of the DPCC sub-group with updated information on current activities and strategic directions for 2024, including support for the Mountain Agenda and the implementation of the Roadmap with a 5-year Action Plan, preparations for the July 2024 session of the UNFCCC SBSTA (Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice) and preparatory events at the UNFCCC COP 29.

The event convened representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Kyrgyz Republic, the World Bank, UNDP, FAO, WFP, GIZ, UNEP, OSCE, CAREC, the Asian Development Bank, JICA and others.

Opening the event, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic Asel Raimkulova noted that the Kyrgyz Republic will present the theme “mountain development” and related areas: water resources, glaciers, biodiversity and climate change.

The meeting was hosted by Torsten Brezina, Regional Director of GIZ, co-chairman of the DPCC sub-group, who highly appreciated the role of CAREC in the preparation and holding of events at the Central Asia Pavilion at COP28.

Director of CAREC Country Office for Kyrgyzstan Kuban Matraimov noted the readiness of the Regional Environmental Center of Central Asia to facilitate the process of participation of Central Asian countries at UNFCCC COP29. He informed the audience about the upcoming Central Asia Climate Change Conference in Almaty, on May 27-29 this year.

Following the discussions, it was decided to add additional topics to the protocol for the  next discussion:

  • Implementation of Five-Year Action Plan for the Development of Mountain Regions 2023-2027;
  • Participation of DPCC sub-group members at CACCC-2024;
  • The beginning of the Kyrgyz Republic’s efforts to participate in COP29 with a country pavilion.
