The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) has published a new analytical report that provides a diagnostic of the drinking water supply and sanitation infrastructure in Central Asia. The bank’s specialists have concluded that the financing gap needs to be significantly reduced for the sustainable development of water supply and sanitation in the countries of the region, the EDB reports. In particular, in Tajikistan, it is planned to invest $0.4 billion in the development of the water supply and sanitation sector for 2025-2030, but EDB experts have calculated that $1.7 billion will be required to fully cover the country’s needs. The regional financing gap for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation) is $12.1 billion. The report also notes that Tajikistan does not have a specialized government agency responsible for housing and public utilities policy and development. However, the government controls and certifies water supply sources and monitors the quality and safety of drinking water. As part of the Strategy for the Development of the Construction Industry of Tajikistan until 2030, the authorities plan to provide 90% of the republic’s cities with drinking water supply systems and 75% with wastewater disposal systems. To achieve these goals, the country needs to attract both domestic and foreign investment in the amount of $950 million, which is equivalent to $140 million annually from 2024 to 2030. In addition, Tajikistan, as part of its work in the international arena, proposed a draft UN climate resolution in Bangkok, which was entitled “Strengthening cooperation on climate change and water connectivity for sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific.” This document envisages expanding partnerships between countries participating in the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), with the aim of achieving Sustainable Development Goal No. 6.
