Prerequisites
Central Asia is a region that is highly vulnerable to climate variability and change, including hydrometeorological hazards. Over several decades, climate change has caused problems such as shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns, severe droughts, increased desertification, deterioration of water and soil quality, and more frequent extreme weather events. These factors have resulted in crop failures, water shortages for hydropower and irrigation, loss of humus, reduced agricultural productivity, increased greenhouse gas emissions from wind and water erosion, and loss of soil carbon sequestration capacity.
The resilience of one country in a region to climate change and natural disasters inevitably depends on the actions of its neighbours. Likewise, climate-resilient and risk-informed development by one country strengthens the long-term resilience of its neighbours. The cross-cutting nature of climate adaptation, climate risk management and disaster risk reduction requires integrated regional efforts.
CAREC, as a regional organization uniting all five countries of the region, has great potential and opportunities to increase resilience in the countries and communities of Central Asia, as well as to support development progress in the context of climate change and growing risks of natural disasters.
About the training
The training is conducted within the framework of the project “Strengthening Regional Cooperation for Climate Risk Management in Central Asia”, which is implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) is responsible for implementing Component 2 of the project, which aims to improve decision-making through accessible climate information. This outcome aims to improve decision-making processes by ensuring that decision makers, stakeholders and the public have easy access to accurate and up-to-date climate information. It aims to improve the availability, usability and dissemination of climate data, research results and forecasts to inform informed and effective decision-making in the face of climate-related challenges.
By the end of 2024, the project plans to conduct 2 regional-level trainings on various aspects of the application of the Central Asian Climate Information Platform (CACIP), in particular on the use of geoportals and datasets.
The purpose and objectives of the training
