Objective: The Government of Kazakhstan has made bold pledges to move towards carbon neutrality and increase revenue collection. This event will discuss how effective carbon pricing can support these two objectives, through the implementation of a carbon tax which can complement the existing emissions trading system. As the European Union applies the carbon-border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), Kazakhstan will be faced with new taxes from its largest trading partner. However, through careful policy planning, there is the potential for Kazakhstan to maintain those taxes to support local development priorities, meet climate commitments and enhance competitiveness. The World Bank and the Economic Research Institute of Kazakhstan are holding a joint event to discuss the design and implementation of carbon taxes.
