End date:

Description:

The United Nations Environment Programme jointly leads an Issues-Based Coalition to support countries as they work towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on climate change and the environment.

Issue-Based Coalitions see UN agencies coordinate their response to cross-cutting challenges. They support governments and the work of UN country teams and serve as platforms to reach out to non-UN stakeholders.

The Coalition on environment and climate change launched today is co-chaired by UNEP, the UN Economic Commission for Europe and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and includes 17 members. It will address activities dedicated to strengthening environmental and climate change governance, improving environmental management, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and promoting the sustainable management of natural resources.

“I am proud that UNEP is playing a leading role in the first regional Issue-Based Coalition on the environment and climate change,” said UNEP’s Europe Director, Bruno Pozzi. “We are not currently on track to meet the environmental dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is therefore vital that the UN works as one to enhance work on issues directly related to the health of people and our planet,” he added.

The Coalition is launched ahead of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, where 350 million hectares of degraded ecosystems are aimed to be restored between 2021 and 2030.
