GLOBAL NETWORK “WOMEN IN WATER DIPLOMACY” REVIEWED THE RESULTS OF 2024
Over 100 participants of the Global Network “Women in Water Diplomacy” around the world along with the Network Process Support Team reviewed the past year’s achievements, discussed key accomplishments, and outlined plans for 2025 at the annual online event “Year-in-Review”.
The “Women in Water Diplomacy” Network is an informal community of practitioners that brings together women experts from various basins and regions worldwide, with deep knowledge in water diplomacy and experience in decision-making regarding transboundary water management. The Network also includes male champions who support the idea of gender equality in water management.
Together, members of the Network work to strengthen the role of women in decision-making processes in transboundary river basins across Central Asia, Southern Africa, North America, and the South Caucasus, with the support of a global coalition of development partners.
Participants from the “Women in Water Resources Management in Central Asia and Afghanistan” Network, supported by Office OSCE in Vienna, the Stockholm International Water Institute, and CAREC, actively took part in the event, contributing significantly to the general and group discussions on the further development of network initiatives.
In particular, discussions included the creation of a new Global Leadership Council of the Network in 2025, which will also include representatives of the Central Asian Network and its coordination mechanism. Additionally, issues of accelerating research initiatives among members and sustainable fundraising for the sustainable development of the Network were addressed.
The Coordinator of the Global Network, Elizabeth A. Koch, Manager of the Environmental Law Institute (USA), highlighted key achievements, including the successful organization of the Global Women’s Forum in Vienna, the active representation of the Network at key international high-level events, such as the World Water Week in Stockholm, African Water Week, and the Dushanbe Water Process.
A significant achievement was the creation of the new “Women in Water Diplomacy in Southern Caucasus” Network, as well as the initiation of joint sessions and informal inter-basin events during the Climate Summit COP-29 in Baku.
The annual online event “Year-in-Review” took place on 17 December 2024.
