As reported by the Chairman of the Geology Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Erlan Akbarov, at a press conference of the Central Communications Service, this year regional studies are being completed in the Eastern and Western areas within the Aral Sea basin, a correspondent for the Kazinform agency reports.

— Kazakhstan has significant prospects for discovering new hydrocarbon deposits. Geologists currently identify 15 sedimentary basins with predicted conventional fuel resources of about 76 billion tons. Today, the entire volume of oil and gas production falls on 5 developed basins. Of these, the Caspian is considered the largest, accounting for about 80% of the country’s resource base. At the same time, 5 additional poorly studied sedimentary basins have significant prospects. These are the North Turgai, Aral, Syr Darya, Shu-Sarysu and Priirtysh sedimentary basins. The unrealized hydrocarbon potential of these basins is still quite significant, — said E. Akbarov.

As the Committee Chairman reported, regional studies using a complex of geological and geophysical methods, including seismic exploration in the Vostochny and Zapadny areas within the Aral Sea poorly studied basin, the study area of which amounted to 56 thousand square kilometers, are being completed this year. Based on the results of the work, the predicted resources of the Zapadny area are estimated at 800 million tons. In the future, exploration work is planned for these areas for a more detailed study.

Also, according to E. Akbarov, this year it is planned to begin studying the Syr Darya sedimentary basin.

Earlier it was reported that 60 promising areas with metal deposits were identified in Kazakhstan .
