Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023.
The report assesses climate change processes and provides recommendations for decision-makers.
The report says climate change intensifies due to human factors. Immediate actions are needed to mitigate climate change impacts, especially in vulnerable countries, including Central Asia.
According to the report, the opportunities to keep global warming below 1.5°C are shrinking while the risk of natural disasters due to climate change is increasing.
IPCC experts see the solution to climate change mitigation in phasing out fossil fuel use and widespread investment in renewable energy sources. The report notes that developed countries should increase their share of international funding for action aimed at combating climate change.
Brief abstracts of the report:
Currently, the pace and scale of climate action are insufficient to tackle climate change.
Adverse impacts from human-caused change will intensify in water scarcity and food production, health and wellbeing, cities, settlements and infrastructure, ecosystem structure, species range shifts and changes in timing.
Extremes become more widespread and pronounced with every increment of warming by +4C°
The most vulnerable to climate change countries are parts of Africa, Asia, Central/South America, LDCs, Small Islands, Arctic.
Mainstreaming effective and equitable climate action and multiple, feasible and effective options are available to reduce GHG emissions, losses and damages; and provide co-benefits.
Increased financing for climate action is needed, in particular increasing 3-6 times the current climate investment. Global financing increase will rapidly reduce emissions.
Developing countries require external funding to meet adaptation needs.
