The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, in collaboration with the World Bank, is developing the second phase of the Northern Aral Sea Preservation Project. This was announced by the head of the ministry, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, during a meeting with the residents of the Kyzylorda region. Currently, the necessary documentation for the project is being developed with funding from a World Bank grant.
The project comprises three main components. The first focuses on developing infrastructure and improving the hydrological state of the Northern Aral Sea and the Syr Darya river delta. The second aims to support stable economic, social, and environmental conditions in the Kyzylorda region. The third component involves updating the information base and water resource management systems.
“As a result of the first phase of the project, the Kokaral dam was constructed, and the water volume in the Northern Aral Sea reached 27.1 billion cubic meters. The second phase aims to improve water resource management, support the development of the fishing industry and ecotourism, enhance the region’s ecological state, and increase the volume and efficiency of water accumulation in the Northern Aral Sea,” stated Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
