The French company CARPI Tech has expressed its readiness to participate in the implementation of priority projects in the energy sector of Tajikistan, the country’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources reports.

This statement was made on February 19 at a meeting between the leadership of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Tajikistan and representatives of the French company.

“In particular, the company has shown interest in the construction of hydroelectric power plants on the Zarafshon (Zarafshan) River,” the statement emphasizes.

It is noted that during the meeting, CARPI Tech representatives presented information about the company’s activities, its potential, international experience and implemented projects, in particular, in the field of construction of hydroelectric dams in various countries around the world.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the potential of the Zarafshon River (together with its tributaries, the Matcha and Fondaria rivers) is estimated at 33.94 billion kWh per year.

There are 13 sections that are advantageous for the construction of hydroelectric power stations with reservoirs. The length of the river is 877 km, the catchment area is 12.3 thousand km.

Let us recall that in 2018, the governments of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan signed agreements on the procedure and conditions for shared participation in the construction and operation of hydroelectric power plants in the Zarafshon River basin. This document envisages the joint construction of two hydroelectric power plants on the Zarafshon River, with a total capacity of 320 MW.

The Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan previously reported that the construction of hydroelectric power plants will be carried out in stages: first, the construction of the Yavan HPP with an estimated cost of $282 million, a capacity of 140 MW and the generation of 700-800 million kWh of electricity. At the next stage, the parties will consider the possibility of building a HPP on the Fondarya River with an estimated cost of $270 million, a capacity of 135 MW and the generation of 500-600 million kWh of electricity.

The project is expected to be financed through loans and grants from international financial organizations, as well as the parties’ own funds invested in the authorized capital of the jointly created enterprise.

The constructed hydroelectric power plants will generate up to 1400 million kWh of environmentally friendly electricity exclusively for the needs of Uzbekistan.

The project will also help support the peak capacity of the unified energy system and create additional jobs during the joint construction and operation of hydroelectric power plants, as well as the flow of electricity to other regions of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan on a parity basis.
