The Roadmap for 2025–2026 to Strengthen Turkmenistan’s International Cooperation to Achieve the Goals and Objectives of the Global Methane Commitment was adopted

On November 1, 2024, during the regular meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, the Roadmap for 2025-2026 was adopted to strengthen international cooperation of Turkmenistan to implement the goals and objectives provided for by the Global Methane Commitment. For the practical implementation of the Roadmap, a Set of Measures was developed and approved.

During the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-26), held in November 2021, Turkmenistan expressed interest in studying in detail the Global Methane Commitment initiative.

The Government of Turkmenistan has carried out comprehensive work, including on the international plane, in this direction. In particular, in June 2023, the Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan approved the Roadmap for 2023–2024 for the development of international cooperation aimed at studying the issue of Turkmenistan joining the Global Methane Commitment, and also created an Intersectoral Commission for the Reduction of Methane Emissions.

Based on the results of the work carried out, at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28), held in Dubai (UAE) from November 30 to December 12, 2023, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov officially announced the country’s accession to the Global Methane Commitment.

Of particular importance is the adoption of the above-mentioned new Roadmap and the Set of Measures for its implementation in the context of translating into practice the obligations arising from the Global Methane Commitment.

The Roadmap reaffirms Turkmenistan’s commitment to reducing methane emissions by 2030 through a major modernization of its energy infrastructure and other relevant measures, thereby contributing to the efforts of the global community in this area.

The document provides for close cooperation with international partners, in particular, with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, other specialized UN agencies, the European Union, the OSCE, IRENA, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, USAID, the United States of America, EU countries, etc.

Along with this, Turkmenistan attaches great importance to direct participation in the activities of the MARS digital platform, created within the framework of the UN Environment Programme.

In order to implement the Roadmap, a set of measures to reduce methane emissions in 2025–2026 is also planned. These include: holding scientific and practical conferences, round tables, seminars, etc. together with various international organizations, continuing cooperation with foreign companies to solve the problems set in this area, drawing up feasibility studies for projects to process and use associated gas through the introduction of innovative and energy-saving technologies, etc.
