Speaking in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis on November 20, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed declaring 2025 the Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy (Atrof-muhitni asrash va yashil iktisodiyot yili).

The head of state noted that today the negative consequences of climate change are acutely felt not only in Uzbekistan, but also in many countries around the world.

Air and water pollution, soil erosion, desertification and uncontrolled use of fossil fuels lead to global warming, an increase in the number of natural disasters and damage to the environment and public health, he said.

In response to these challenges, three years ago Uzbekistan launched the nationwide initiative “Yashil Makon”. The Regional Climate Strategy has been launched jointly with neighboring countries. The University of Central Asia for the Study of Climate Change and the Environment has been established in Tashkent.

In addition, Uzbekistan initiated two important resolutions adopted by the UN in this area. At the moment, “green” energy is becoming one of the drivers of the country’s economy, he added.

“Having studied the opinions, wishes and recommendations of our citizens, in order to take this work to a new, higher level,” the president proposed declaring 2025 the Year of Environmental Protection and the Green Economy.

Those gathered fully supported this initiative, reports the press secretary of the head of state, Sherzod Asadov.

The head of state stated that the government will develop a state program aimed at fulfilling the key tasks outlined in the title of the year.

This program should prioritize the introduction of “green” technologies, water conservation, a significant increase in green areas, mitigation of the consequences of the Aral Sea disaster, solving the problem of household waste and, most importantly, improving public health, he said .

Let us recall that 2024 was declared the Year of Support for Youth and Business in Uzbekistan during the President’s New Year’s holiday greetings.

2023 was declared the Year of Human Care and Quality Education in Uzbekistan.
