Independent environmentalists from Karaganda, together with the non-governmental organization Arnika from the Czech Republic, offered their recommendations to businesses and the public on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change in Kazakhstan, KazTAG reports.

“This is not an easy task for the Karaganda region. Every year, enterprises in our region emit more than 600 thousand tons of pollutants into the atmosphere – this is 24% of the republic’s emissions. This affects not only the quality of the air we breathe, but also rapidly changes the climate in the region: climatologists note an increase in the number of abnormal temperatures and extreme weather events,” note environmentalists from the NGO “EcoMuseum”.

According to environmentalists, it is already possible to significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment, reduce your expenses, and increase comfort. In their opinion, the proposed measures are designed for any budget and any organization.

“By reducing heat and electricity consumption, you not only reduce emissions, but also save your own budget. For example, by replacing all the lighting in the building with new energy-efficient ones, you can save up to 75% on electricity costs. Sealing seams and installing thermal insulation can increase the room temperature by 4-6 degrees and reduce heating costs. Insulating hot water supply and heating pipes will reduce heat loss by 25%, and installing automated heating points will save up to 30% on heating costs. Heat meters will help track heat consumption, avoiding overpayments for unnecessary heating. Installing thermostatic regulators on radiators will help avoid overheating and excess heat consumption. Heat pumps for heating allow you to reduce heating costs from 25% to 80% by extracting heat from the air, ground or water. This is especially effective in the cold season and can significantly reduce your energy bills, while reducing the impact on the environment,” say environmentalists.

Environmentalists recommend replacing old heating boilers with new energy-efficient models. They also say that devices with automatic sleep mode or complete shutdown when not in use reduce electricity consumption during downtime.

Environmentalists advise planting greenery around the building, which will help moderate extreme temperatures, increase humidity and cool the air naturally. Environmentalists also say that recycling food waste into organic fertilizer – compost – helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the need for chemical fertilizer production.

“By collecting waste separately (paper, plastic, metal, glass, etc.), you not only contribute to improving the environment, but you can also earn some money. There are several companies in the Karaganda region that accept waste from individuals and organizations,” they say at the EcoMuseum.
