In Kazakhstan, in order to strengthen the fight against the “black market” for water, a new agency has been created under the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation – the Committee for the Regulation, Protection and Use of Water Resources.
The press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation reported this.
The new committee will combat illegal use of water and distortion of its accounting data, as well as illegal economic activities on the country’s water bodies.
“The ministry is taking the fight against illegal water use under special control. The work of the new committee is aimed at preventing violations and protecting the country’s water resources. Together with the changes to the legislation we propose, this should significantly strengthen the fight against the “black market” of water,” said Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
Kazakhstan is considered a water-deficient country, 2.8 percent of its territory is covered by water, two-thirds are represented by arid zones, where access to water is very difficult. A significant part of water resources comes from neighboring countries.
According to the authorities, by the end of 2023, water supply to the population was 98.9 percent in cities and 96.6 percent in villages. Only nine regions of the country were provided with 100 percent water.
