In 2024, World Environment Day focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”
Today, Turkmenistan hosts the Conference “Turkmenistan – a Place of Ecological Well-being” devoted to the World Environment Day in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
The conference presented extensive work on environmental protection carried out by Turkmenistan together with international partners.

– Main Areas of Development of International Cooperation on Environmental Protection
– Experiences of Central Asian countries in the systematic use of natural resources in arid and saline agricultural areas

– The Role of the Environment in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
– Improving the Ecological Situation of the Coastal Region of Aral Sea
Zafar Makhmudov, Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), began his speech by congratulating the participants and organizers of the conference on World Environment Day.
He expressed gratitude on behalf of CAREC to the Government of Turkmenistan for organizing and inviting to this conference.
“It is a great honor for CAREC to participate here and jointly celebrate the achievements of Turkmenistan in the field of environmental protection,” said Zafar Makhmudov.
He briefly informed about the main program areas of CAREC, noting that dozens of national and regional projects are being implemented together with national partners, and the world’s leading technologies are constantly being introduced.
At the moment, the water project “Support to the implementation of the regional WAVE project on water resources and the environment” is being implemented.
According to Zafar Makhmudov, it is planned to launch a new national project in Turkmenistan “Catalyzing nature-positive transformations in the agricultural sector of Turkmenistan to increase resilience to climate change”.
“Based on the implementation of these programs, great efforts are being made to implement internationally significant environmental tasks, including the implementation of the decisions of the Rio Conventions to combat desertification, climate change, the Paris Climate Agreement, and biodiversity conservation,” said the CAREC Executive Director.
Concluding his speech, Zafar Makhmudov expressed confidence in the continuation of productive cooperation in Turkmenistan and the Central Asian region.
