The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $1 million grant to provide technical assistance to the Government of Tajikistan to develop floating solar photovoltaic systems, according to the ADB press service.

“This innovative initiative aims to maximize the use of what Tajikistan has: sun and water,” noted Ko Sakamoto, ADB Country Director for Tajikistan. “It’s a smart step toward a future where everyone has reliable energy year-round, without harming the environment.

” Since 93% of Tajikistan’s territory is mountainous, flat land is scarce and is primarily used for agriculture and housing, making the construction of ground-mounted solar power plants expensive. At the same time, the country’s reservoirs provide ideal solar surfaces and existing infrastructure, making floating solar panels a practical and efficient way to generate clean energy.

The technical assistance will include assessing the potential of up to five reservoirs in the country for the installation of floating solar power plants and preparing a detailed feasibility study for the construction of a large-scale floating solar power plant system on one of the reservoirs.

Technical assistance is also aimed at strengthening local capacity and knowledge in floating solar technologies. Government officials and energy professionals will gain practical experience through study tours, meetings with experts, and regional knowledge exchange.

In addition, the project will modernize the financial management system of the state-owned energy company Barki Tojik to improve efficiency and transparency.
