During the session, participants discussed issues of integrating climate and natural risks into urban planning processes in order to create a sustainable, inclusive and adaptive urban environment.
It was noted that climate change is already having a serious impact on Uzbekistan and the entire Central Asian region – extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, droughts are intensifying, soils and water resources are degrading. Against the backdrop of growing urbanization and socio-economic inequality, the vulnerability of cities to such threats is increasing.
The main goal of the event was to present innovative and systemic approaches aimed at turning urban development into a tool for sustainable and climate-adapted development. Special attention was paid to multi-level early warning systems as an effective mechanism for reducing the vulnerability of communities and increasing their ability to adapt to a changing climate.
Experts shared best practices and policy measures within the framework of an integrated approach to urban sustainability. In particular, the experience of the city of Namangan in applying the principles of sustainable urban development was presented, as well as the initiative to create “green belts” in Central Asia using the example of the Jarkurgan district. In addition, issues of climate-smart urban planning and reducing greenhouse gas emissions were discussed.
This event was an important step towards increasing the sustainability of cities, adapting to climate change and ensuring environmental safety in the context of urbanization.
