At the Fifth Meeting of Ministers and Heads of Agencies of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member States, attended by Mr. Zhang Ming, Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and delegations from China, India, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Nysanbayev, proposed the establishment of an International Centre for Afforestation of the dried Aral Sea bed and semi-desert zones.
The meeting also approved and recommended for signing the Agreement on cooperation in the field of environmental protection between the governments of the SCO member states and the Statement of the Council of Heads of State on effective waste management, which will be presented at the SCO Heads of State Council on July 3-4 in Astana.
The parties approved joint approaches of the SCO member states to solving environmental problems, the plan of joint actions to implement the SCO Green Belt program for 2024-2026, the plan to implement the Concept of Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Protection for 2025-2027 and the regulations on the SCO Special Working Group on Climate Change.
