International Energy Saving Day
November 11
The first International Energy Saving Day was celebrated in 2008. The decision to celebrate this day was made in April 2008 in Kazakhstan at an international meeting of coordinators of SPARE, the international environmental network “School Project on Resources and Energy.”
Since approximately 20 countries are currently participating in the project, this immediately gave the newly proclaimed Energy Saving Day international status.
International Energy Saving Day once again draws the attention of authorities and the public to the rational use of resources and the development of renewable energy sources.
Energy conservation plays a vital role in preserving natural resources. Saved energy can be used to replace newly produced energy, thereby reducing environmental pollution. Furthermore, energy conservation is economically beneficial. Energy conservation measures are 2.5 to 3 times cheaper than producing and delivering the same amount of newly generated energy to consumers.
This holiday is a great opportunity to talk to your friends and family about energy conservation and renewable energy sources, explain why it is so important to do this, and hold events for the general public.
The simplest and most basic energy saving measures are available to everyone and can be applied in everyday life almost everywhere.
As part of the International Energy Saving Day, countries involved in the project are hosting a wide range of events, from practical measures to insulate school classrooms to street protests. Students, teachers, representatives of environmental organizations, government employees, and specialists from research institutes are participating in the event.
You too can organize your own campaign and become part of the common effort aimed at preserving the environment and developing energy that meets the principles of sustainable development.
