World Wind Day

June 15, 2025

June 15th is Global Wind Day .

The initiators of this seemingly unusual holiday were the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). Its goal is to attract the attention of the public (primarily representatives of energy complexes from different countries) to the enormous potential of wind energy.

According to experts, the development of wind energy will help solve a large number of problems not only of energy, but also of economic and environmental nature . In particular, active work in this direction can lead to a reduction in the huge sums that are annually invested in energy. As a result, the problem of limited fossil fuel resources will not be so acute, and the world will be able to overcome the crisis of global climate change.

Wind power generation is a renewable energy source. This type of energy is obtained by converting the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical energy. People began using windmills as early as the 3rd-2nd centuries BC, and the world’s first wind power plant was built in 1890 in Denmark, which has been actively using this type of energy ever since: about 47% of all energy generated in this country is obtained from wind power plants.

“Wind power plants are the future!” say experts. Many countries understand this already. Despite the doubts of skeptics who consider “taming the wind” a hopeless undertaking, wind power plants (WPP) are now successfully operating in almost 80 countries around the world, and thousands of people are involved in wind energy production.

The main leaders in terms of capacity of wind turbines put into operation at the moment are China, the USA, Germany, Spain and Denmark.

Wind Day organizers emphasize that the main goals of the holiday include introducing the general public to wind energy. People are shown in practice how wind energy is generated. On June 15, thousands of different events are held in many countries around the world, during which excursions to wind stations and meetings with experts are organized for the population, photo exhibitions, lectures and seminars on the topic of “Wind – an alternative source of energy” are held.

Wind Day was first celebrated in Europe in 2007. Already in 2009, it acquired the status of a worldwide event, with more than 30 countries joining the celebration. Their number is growing rapidly every year. Moreover, each person can celebrate this unusual day on their own: for example, by going with friends to launch kites, using the free and powerful energy of the wind for this fun activity.
